Taylor Swift has long strived to be a positive role model for her peers and her fans. She has long said she wants to be inspired and instill model behavior in other women. Taylor Swift’s latest example illustrates that she is a model daughter and hopes to inspire others to take an active interest in their parents’ welfare and spare them possible heartache: Swift prodded her mom to get a complete physical, which lead to a cancer diagnosis.
Swift shared online that her mother, Andrea Finlay, received a recent diagnosis of cancer. In her Tumblr post, titled Just So You Know, the singer/musician shared an update that she readily admitted she wished she was not providing this particular message, “but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you,” she added.
The 24-year-old explained that she asked her mother, as a Christmas gift to Taylor, to go to the doctor for a complete medical workup to ascertain the state of her health, in spite of no reasons to be concerned. Initially reluctant, Finley acquiesced eventually and they were all shocked when the results arrived. The recording star explained that she was saddened to report that her mother had been diagnosed with cancer.
While not forthcoming with other specifics, like type of cancer or prognosis, Swift did indicate her and particularly her mother’s desires to use their experience as a model for others. Swift explained that her mother wanted her daughter’s fans to know in case their parents are too busy to bother going to the doctor like she was. The two women encouraged fans to get their parents checked for cancer, which could lead to an early diagnosis before symptoms really appear and an easier battle against the illness. Likewise, they hope people get “peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about.”
Taylor Swift has always been very open about her experiences in life, whether happy or heartbreaking, as well as her views on being a role model to inspire others. The singer has acknowledged “trying to live my life with some sort of thoughtfulness put into my actions.” The model daughter also hopes to spare others from similar mistakes and any heartache in life or their careers.
She has commented several times on the dearth of positive role models in her chosen profession. The star has strived to find examples of others with a similar career trajectory to follow, but with no success.
In TIME, she partly blamed the music industry role model problem on the pressure singers like Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Lady Gaga feel to sell themselves as sex objects. While she is trying to age gracefully, Swift admits that she is guided by the thought of the people in her life she would disappoint by poor actions, like her mom, dad, future kids, etc. She added, that she admits that there will undoubtedly be things in her life that future grandchildren would make fun of. She said, however, that she would rather their comments be about her awkward dancing in the music video for Shake It Off, instead of comments like “Grandma, is that your nipple?”
For those familiar with pictures of Swift with models, actresses, singers like Lorde and the sisters in Haim know that she surrounds herself with equally successful young ladies. She has said, “I surround myself with smart, beautiful, passionate, driven, ambitious women.” She explained that being with other females who are successful motivates, thrills, challenges and inspires.
Swift ended her social media post with a thank you to her followers “for caring about my family so much.” She hope they never has to deal with an ill family member too. While she hopes her message helps and serves to inspire, the model daughter in Taylor Swift also hopes to spare others.
