The Vampire Diaries is losing a main cast member this season. This is not just a character from the side stories, but one of the three main cast members who the original story was all about. After months of speculation, Nina Dobrev has confirmed that she is not staying on for the show’s seventh season.
This news quickly raised questions over whether the show can continue for a seventh season. The Vampire Diaries was confirmed for a new season in January, and two of the main cast members had quickly confirmed to sign on. There were speculations that Dobrev was the one to leave due to rumors of troubles behind scenes and the fact that she wants to break into Hollywood.
The 26-year-old actress recently confirmed that she will leave, and celebrated a goodbye party over the Easter weekend. She said that her character has been through so much, and she always thought of it as a six-year story for Elena Gilbert. Within those six years, she has been killed, resurrected, tortured and fallen in love twice. She had has the chance to play a human, vampire, doppelganger, and so much more; definitely much more than many other young actresses would have gotten the chance to play within a six year period on one show.
Both Dobrev and executive producer Julie Plec confirmed that it was the actress’ decision to leave the show. Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, who play brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, have both signed on for the seventh season. The Vampire Diaries is just losing one main cast member at the end of this season.
Dobrev said that she wants to rest and get some of her freedom back. The last six years have certain been time-consuming and difficult for her. For the most part, she had two roles to play as she played doppelgangers Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce. It was only in season five that Katherine was killed off.
The idea of Dobrev leaving was announced back in August. It was reported as one of the main trio, mainly due to there still being time to get the 26-year-old to sign on for another season of The Vampire Diaries. However, she is adamant that this is her last, and Plec is not completely happy with the decision. For her, the story has always been about the love triangle between Elena, Stefan and Damon. It is a scary thought continuing the show without the main character, however she did admit that it is also extremely stimulating.
Dobrev is not the only person saying goodbye to her character on The Vampire Diaries. Steven R. McQueen has already left the show, and Michael Trevino will be saying goodbye to werewolf/former hybrid Tyler. So far, Candice Accola and Kat Graham have confirmed that they will stick around for a seventh season, along with the two other main cast members.
Many fans will want to know how the show will exist. There were many rumors that season six was going to be the last, but it may be the case that season seven is the last as it has already been confirmed. It may be difficult for The Vampire Diaries to continue after losing one of its main cast members this season.
