Actress Anna Kendrick, who stars as Beca Mitchel in Pitch Perfect 2, challenged and beat The Late Late Show host, James Corden, in a Riff-Off on Friday night during the show. As Corden was sitting at his desk, talking, Kendrick showed up on the stage and issued a Riff-Off Challenge to the late night talk show host, and he stood up to the challenge. The result was a highly entertaining Riff-Off Battle. check out the video of it, below!
Kendrick, 29, and Corden, 36, are actually good friends, and they acted and sang together in the movie Into the Woods. In the movie from 2014, Corden plays a cursed baker and Kendrick is Cinderella.
The Riff-Off Challenge was done just for the fun and entertainment value of it, but Corden gave Kendrick more than a match, as he has had a fair amount of singing in his background. For example, he has acted and has sung on Broadway, even garnering a Tony Award for himself for his performance in “One Man, Two Guvnors.”
In the video and on The Late Late Show, Kendrick confronted Corden and asked him about his claim that he was the best a cappella singer in town. He told her that it was not just what he was saying, but that it was the truth. Kendrick took issue with that, saying that she was the best, and she then challenged him to a Riff-Off. Kendrick has been involved in Riff-Offs, in which groups have to sing songs in a battle against each other based on different categories, while filming Pitch Perfect 2, as the leader of the a cappella group, the Barden Bellas.
Anna Kendrick, who won a lip sync battle she was in against The Office star, John Krasinski, on Spike TV’s Lip Sync Battle, was confident that she would win the Riff-Off Challenge, also. Corden had a little bit of help, as his background singers were the a cappella group The Filharmonic, featured in Pitch Perfect 2 and also the on the reality competition T.V. series, The Sing-Off.
Displaying a bit of showmanship, Corden donned a track suit with his name on the back of it, similar to the one that Kendrick was wearing. He started off the competition by singing ‘NSYNC’s Bye Bye Bye. He did a terrific job singing it, but Kendrick looked like she was unimpressed as he sang. She sang, in answer to his first song, the Ludicris hit, Move B***h, Get Out the Way. She acted as if she was calling him a b***h as she sang.
Not wanting to be outdone, Corden then sang a bit of Poison, by Bell Biv DeVoe. He was great, as before; but, Kendrick seemed to take the lead with her next song, Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benatar. After her performance, Corden acknowledged that he was not the best a cappella singer in town, after all, admitting that that honor belonged to Kendrick.
Then, James Corden and Anna Kendrick joined forces, singing a medley of songs in the “Weather” category. The first song that they sang together was Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice. That led into Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves.
Though Anna Kendrick was declared the winner of the Riff-Off Challenge by James Corden and she beat him, he also demonstrated his own considerable singing talent. It was a very entertaining challenge and both Kendrick and Corden were amazing. Check out the video, below!
