Earlier tonight, May 6, it was announced that Jennifer Love Hewitt will not be returning for the 11 season of Criminal Minds. The actress had a very short run on the series, participating in only one season. Erica Messer, one of the main honchos behind the CBS super-hit, recently confirmed the 36-year-old’s departure to Entertainment Weekly.
As for what producer’s did in terms of writing off Hewitt’s character of Kate Callahan, the season 10 finale ended with the Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) officially turning in her resignation to Quantico’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) head Aaron Hotchner, explaining that she wanted to both spend more time with her adopted daughter Meg as well as take some time off to prepare for the delivery of her first natural child.
Ironically, the fictional character’s reason for departing reflects the real reason the former Ghost Whisperer star is leaving the show. Hewitt is currently actually pregnant with her second child, with a due date of July. Whether or not her leave will be permanent is not yet known, as Messer says she has no interest in shutting down the idea of a Callahan’s potential return to the BAU.
It is also unknown who will replace Jennifer Love Hewitt on the 11th season of Criminal Minds, following her departure at the end of this season. Messer, however, has hinted at the idea of having a guest star visit the set for a little while.
