Chicago was victim to a spree of multiple shootings across the city during Memorial Day weekend. The shootings claimed the lives of nine people and injured 32 others, according to local authorities.
Among one of the injured was a four-year-old girl, identified now as Jacele Johnson. The girl was struck in the head with a bullet while sitting inside of a vehicle during a party on Friday evening. The four-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery, according to her mother. The current condition of the girl is unknown.
During the same incident, two other children were victims of the shooting spree. A 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy were grazed with bullets in the neck and head. Both were taken to the hospital for their injuries. .
Anti-violence groups have continuously pushed lawmakers to make stricter penalties on those who are apprehended for the violent shootings. Their hopes are to halt the increasing number of shootings on holiday weekends.
In 2014, Chicago went a record-setting 42 hours without a shooting. However, a 14-year-old was shot an killed in the final hours of Memorial Day weekend.
