At around 1pm today, a suspect was shot and injured by the police in Portage, Michigan. Conflicting reports have come in about the death of the suspect who was involved in an altercation with the police at Anna’s Vineyard Apartments.
Two ambulances were seen leaving the scene and it has been reported that another person was taken to the hospital. It is not known whether the person was a bystander or with the suspect. No officers were injured during the shooting.
The apartment complex is off West Milham Avenue, west of U.S.-131. Witnesses told 24 Hour News 8 that the suspect had been in a red vehicle and had been trying to outrun police cars when the officers opened fire. Authorities later said that the suspect was shot following a police chase which ended at the apartment complex’s parking lot.
The suspect was not a resident of the apartment complex and had used the parking lot to cut through. Police are investigating the incident and have blocked off Milham Avenue and access to the parking lot.
Several schools are in the vicinity of the shooting and the 12th Street Elementary School is not far from there. Portage Public Schools did not feel the need for a lockdown as they are not within walking distance of the apartment complex, but Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo was locked down for some time when the suspect was being pursued. Authorities say that school buses and traffic in the area will be affected because of the ongoing investigation.
