For the most part, it is safe to say that when the majority of people think of movie sequels, the thought is accompanied with an eye-roll and a comment about unnecessary time and money spent, but that does not seem to be the case for Pitch Perfect 2. The Pitch Perfect sequel, not only had theatre doors opening, but it also seems to be opening up doors for women in Hollywood’s film industry.
Pitch Perfect 2, which opened in 3,473 theatres during the second week of May, grossed an enormous $70 million its opening weekend. That dollar amount exceeds way past the numbers that Pitch Perfect brought it during its entire duration at the box office. Figures of that sort are rarely heard of and considering it surpassed the amount of money that big box office movies raked in on their opening weekend, such as Furious 7, which grossed $33.8 million and Avengers: Age of Ultron, which grossed an estimated $44.4 million, Pitch Perfect 2 has left the world in a state shock.
With numbers as big as the ones brought in by the Elizabeth Banks directed sequel, a lot of people have been left wondering if the cast of Pitch Perfect 2, which is predominately female, is a big contributing factor regarding the movie’s remarkable success. According to the viewer demographic, 75 percent of the people who checked out the movie on opening weekend were female. That is very telling for Hollywood movie producers who are looking to create something that will be a box office hit. Hollywood needs to bring more movies to the big screen that are geared towards females, because those are the movies that seem to do extremely well these days. Pitch Perfect 2 seems to be the film that is going to open up Hollywood doors for women wanting to work behind the camera, instead of in front of it.
The movie that was also written and directed by a female and grossed $85.2 during its opening weekend was Fifty Shades of Grey, another movie that was geared towards the female audience. These two movies, Pitch Perfect 2 and Fifty Shades of Grey, are the two biggest box office hits of 2015 and they both were mainly female orientated.
To take it a step further, instead of Hollywood creating more movies made for the enjoyment of women, there should be more women in Hollywood who are creating movies, period. Women are making their talents producing and directing known to the world and the skills being shown behind the camera, are proving to be a great success with movie theatre goers.
Female screenwriters are offering up something that is quite refreshing and enduring to the world of film. The difference in the delivery of a movie that has been created by a woman is subtle, yet noticeable and it displays the change that is occurring behind the Hollywood backdrop.
Women are bringing something different to the big screen, a certain touch that seems to completely engage an audience. Pitch Perfect 2 has definitely opened a new door for women and the acceptance of female roles that are being played behind the camera.
