The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have now officially announced the name of their second royal baby. The Princess of Cambridge is called Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Charlotte was widely expected to be the first name given to the new princess. There are connections for both William and Kate. Charlotte was the name of the daughter of George VI, who unfortunately died in childbirth when she was just 21 years old. She would have become Queen of Great Britain after her father had that not happened. The name is also Pippa Middleton’s middle name, which was one of the reasons for its popularity with the bookmakers. Elizabeth and Diana were both expected to feature as middle names for obvious reasons.
Kensington Palace made the announcement of the name this afternoon, once Queen Elizabeth II had a chance to visit her great-granddaughter. The new royal baby is fourth in line for the throne, behind her grandfather, father and brother, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George respectively. It is unlikely that she will ever be queen, but she will likely play an important part in the royal family, much like Prince Harry, her uncle, who is now fifth in line for the throne.
The Kensington Palace official was asked for the meaning behind the names. He refused to say, except for that the names speak for themselves.
