Shonda Rhimes got a clean sweep on the ABC renewals. The network confirmed that all her Thursday night dramas are being renewed for new seasons in the 2015-2016 period. Some fans were disappointed hearing some of the news, considering the last few weeks on a certain medical drama. However, most fans expressed their excitement for new seasons of their favorite shows.
Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder have all been renewed for new seasons. It will see Grey’s Anatomy go into its 12th season, making it one of the longest running shows on TV at the moment. Criminal Minds and Supernatural are just behind it with being renewed for their 11th seasons in the same period.
While Rhimes has a clean sweep, there are still a large number of people boycotting one or more of her shows. Two weeks ago on Grey’s Anatomy, a character that has been there from the beginning was killed off. Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd was killed after a car crash and poor medical training led to him being brain dead. His wife Meredith Grey had to make the decision to turn his life support off.
Fans started a petition to get the character back, but that does not look likely. It has led to some fans hating Rhimes for her decision to kill him off, and they worry about the characters on their other beloved shows. ABC does not seem that worried about fans no longer watching the shows as they give Rhimes a clean sweep on show renewals.
According to Bellamy Young, this news could mean that the Scandal season finale is tweaked. The executive producer reportedly has a habit of making last minute changes, even just a week before finales air. It could mean that actors are currently back at work and editors are back in the editing room to make these changes to leave a chilling cliffhanger, knowing full well that it can all be wrapped up in the season premiere.
Rhimes is not the evil person that fans are currently making her out to be. She knows that her shows would be nothing without the cast and crews around her, which is why she treats them well and thanks them for all their hard work at the end of it all. At the end of the season 11 filming and editing for Grey’s Anatomy, she reportedly left a long note, quoting Ellis Grey to tell the cast and crew that they are “anything but ordinary.” They all also got a gift for all their hard work. A photo of it all was shared on Instagram by one of the crew members.
While fans are still fuming over the death of Derek Shepherd, the network views it as a great time to renew the season. ABC announced the renewal of a number of shows yesterday, including Once Upon a Time, Nashville and Secrets and Lies. However, nobody scored as well with the ABC renewals as Rhimes, who scored a clean sweep with her fan-favorite shows.
