On Thursday morning, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released the identification of last night’s Charleston, South Carolina, church shooter as Dylann Storm Roof, a 21-year-old male. Roof is still at large and considered armed and dangerous. Authorities warn people not to go close to him if seen, and to call 911.
On Wednesday night, Roof entered a primarily-black church in Charleston and opened fire on the crowd. The Charleston police chief stated nine people were confirmed dead as of this morning, three males and six females. The local coroners office is currently in the process of identifying the bodies and notifying the families of the deceased.
According to initial reports, South Carolina State Senator Clementa Pinckney was among those who were killed, as well as the pastor of the church. A black flag graced the desk of Pinckney this morning at the South Carolina State Capitol.
The FBI has now decided to consider the incident as a hate crime and are actively seeking to speak with witnesses. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley released a statement saying, “Today we’re committed to finding this horrible scoundrel, but today this community is going to provide the best example of a community coming together.”
According to local sources, the Charleston shooter, Dylann Storm Roof, has been arrested in Shelby, North Carolina. This comes just 12 hours after the incident occurred.
