Looks like 2015 may be the year of the comebacks. The latest news has arrived that the esteemed and groundbreaking artist Janet Jackson will be releasing new music (a new single, album, and going on tour) very soon. The eclectic and trend-setting Jackson is coming fresh off of marital bliss to bless the masses with some new audio sensations to get into.
It has been quite some time since we have heard from the Control artist. After her marriage to Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana in 2012, Jackson took some much needed personal time to enjoy life and be happy. Fans passionately waited for her return or, at least, an interview to know that music was still a part of her future plans. As time progressed, the 49-year-old singer made some mild appearances with her new beau but had not confirmed anything new. Earlier this past week, Jackson finally broke her silence.
Taking to her website, the All For You songstress announced three big headlining topics, including that she will be releasing new music very soon. For the first announcement, fans rejoiced as she proclaimed a new studio album is slated to be released sooner than expected. This latest project will be the first time music lovers get a chance to hear a full album from the icon in almost seven years and the first project to be released since her split with Island Def Jam. The project will also be the first release under her newly formed record label Rhythm Nation Records and fully distributed by BMG Rights Management.
A bold and independent move for releasing new music, which is the first for the singer. She will have full creative control of her latest work, while still focusing her attention on signing both new and well known artists. Considering that her last partnership with Def Jam did not go exactly as expected, this new partnership is set for great potential of churning out innovative music. The split from her former label was a joint decision as she has been quoted saying that Island was trying to turn her into a Sade.
The hiatus from music could also be contributed to the performance of Jackson’s last two bodies of work-Discipline and 20 Y.O. Both projects produced multiple chart-trending singles but failed to attain platinum status in the United States music charts. Seeming that her image still did not fully recover from the Superbowl halftime show nipple gate, she pursued other avenues of entertainment.
Taking to the big screen and brushing off her acting chops, Jackson starred in a two Tyler Perry directed films. In 2010, she reprised her role as the psychologist Patricia in Why Did I Get Married Too?. Jackson also released a promotional single for the film, titled Nothing. Although the movie received mixed-to-bad reviews, Jackson was still praised for her dramatic portrayal.
The same year, Jackson took on the role of a Devil Wears Prada-esque character for For Colored Girls. The film, based on Ntozake Shange’s play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow was Enuf, also received mixed reviews based on its flair for melodrama. Though the critics targeted the lack of Perry’s finesse in storytelling, Jackson’s portrayal of business woman Jo Bradmore was met with similar reviews. Following the two films, Jackson went back on a world tour in 2011. It was not until this past May that news finally broke of her return to the studio, and possibly the charts.
Already announcing to release a new single very soon (less than 30 days), there is still no word yet on the full details on Janet Jackson’s upcoming album. Fans can expect to hear the finished product later this Fall and world tour, as promised by the official website.
