Jon Stewart, world-renowned comedian and host of popular late-night television program, The Daily Show, has put the media on blast for praising Caitlyn (formerly Bruce) Jenner’s looks. His reasoning, however, had nothing to do with his own personal opinions on the matter; in fact, the 52-year-old was very happy that various television channels and news sites gave the situation coverage, but was unhappy regarding the way they chose to cover it.
Stewart stated that, although he was prepared to be offended at the lack of support going Jenner’s way and assumed there would be more ridicule than support, he was pleasantly surprised at how many news officials came through and did the right thing by not challenging the woman’s choice in identity as if it was any of their business in the first place. However, these individuals quickly moved on to statements that proved that they were not broadcasting the story for the right reasons. “It’s really heartening to see not only is everyone willing to accept Caitlyn Jenner as a woman, but to waste no time in treating her like a woman,” the host sarcastically commented. He also added, “Welcome to being a woman in America.”
This statement was in response to Stewart’s view of most news stations going straight from breaking the story of Jenner’s first full appearance as a woman in the latest issue of Vanity Fair, after having officially become Caitlyn after years of having to hide her true identity due to fear of not being accepted, to discussing whether or not she was attractive. Indeed, the majority of comments passed by news articles and segments covering the story were regarding their views that she was “hot,” with some even going so far as to say that Jenner looks “better” as a woman.
Stewart was not hesitant to voice his discontent with this, saying that given the incredible journey the former Olympian has gone through over the years, respect should be given to that aspect rather than to her looks. He believes that focusing on a woman’s looks rather than her achievements is part of what is wrong with the world, and is very disappointed in the media for seizing the opportunity to inflict that mentality on another woman as soon as they get the chance.
Stewart has been one of the biggest advocates of women’s rights and equality in mainstream media for quite some time. Indeed, various Internet sites and groups regularly share videos detailing the comedian’s statements regarding rape culture, sexism, patriarchy, and the like. Stewart is never on the fence with these kinds of issues, and does not understand why the idea of women being treated fairly and not like objects is such a foreign concept to so many, given what century the world is currently in.
Earlier in the year, Stewart announced that he would be stepping down from his 15-year reign on The Daily Show. He will be replaced by 31-year-old Trevor Noah. Whether or not his successor will share the same views on women’s rights and controversial issues, such as Bruce Jenner’s transformation into Caitlyn, remains to be seen. Stewart, however, is not ashamed of having recently put the media on blast for their sexist comments of Jenner’s journey.
