Cristian de la Fuente was set to host the 2015 Miss USA pageant, but he recently quit after blasting newly-minted presidential candidate Donald Trump, a tirade which included calling the 69-year-old a “clown.” His reasoning for dropping out of the gig lies with Trump’s very outspoken policies on immigration and his recent comments made towards Mexicans.
The business titan referred to Mexicans as “rapists” and “drug traffickers,” allegations that Fuente felt were completely out-of-line and unacceptable. He called out Trump as being ignorant, and stated he was unable to work in an event that was in any way associated with the man’s name. The 41-year-old continued, “It is unacceptable to launch a presidential candidacy created in a rhetoric of hatred and discrimination,” and went on to repeat the insults Trump hurled at Mexicans. He finished the video clip, which was posted on his Facebook page on June 25, by expressing his sorrow that such an important institution as Miss USA was in the hands of a “clown.”
Reports have stated that another Latino star, Roselyn Sanchez, chose to leave the gig in light of Trump’s recent comments. She and Fuentes star on Devious Maids together. J Balvin, a Columbian singer who was also set to be involved in the event, quit in protest as well.
Trump’s attack on Mexicans is slowly leading his Miss Universe world to unravel around him. Upon the resignation of Sanchez and Fuentes from the aforementioned gig, he lost a major TV deal with Univision, who pulled the plug on airing the competition because they could not support the entrepreneur’s remarks by agreeing to show it. In response, Trump accused the American/ Spanish broadcast network of pulling out of Miss USA due to him having “exposed the terrible trade deals” made with Mexico by the United States. He went on to insist that his beef is not with Mexico or Mexicans themselves, but rather with the aforementioned poor deals he feels are being made, and also stated that, indeed, he really does love the country. Univision is said to not be going back on their decision of canceling their airing of the event following Miss USA host de la Fuente quitting, after blasting Trump and calling him a clown.
Trump officially announced his impending run for President of the United States in 2016 on June 16, and the reception has been mixed, with reactions being more on the critical side. The man is extremely well-known for his firm, some say completely unreasonable, stances on immigration and border protection. Indeed, it is a widely discussed fact that Trump wants to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico in order to keep immigrants from sneaking in unregistered. This recent conflict with the Miss USA pageant is not helping his popularity in the slightest.
The airing of Miss USA on Univision this year was set to be something of a milestone event, because for the first time ever, a Spanish language simulcast was arranged to occur. However, this will not happen due to the event being canceled after Trump aired his insulting views on Mexicans, as well as because the Miss USA host has chosen to quit after blasting the businessman and calling him a clown.
