On Wednesday, a New York City transit cop opened fire on and killed a man who stabbed him with a knife in an apparent skirmish in a subway station in Coney Island, according to local law enforcement officials. There is no information regarding what led to the man to attack the officer.
The transit officer was stabbed in the neck and shoulder by the assailant at the subway station platform. The incident occurred on the Q train at the Ocean Parkway stop around 1:30 p.m. Initial reports stated the officer was attempting to solve a dispute between a man and a woman.
According to eyewitnesses on the train, the suspect revealed a knife after arguing with the officer when he approached, and then stabbed him in the neck and shoulder. Following the stabbing, the officer reached for his firearm and shot the suspect, killing him.
Local hospital officials stated the officer was in stable condition. The suspect in the matter was pronounced dead on scene by emergency responders.
A knife was found on the scene when back up arrived. The suspect’s name has yet to be released.
