They seemed like the perfect Nashville couple for the past 10 years, while both of their careers became hotter. Their public comments of support for each other (and public displays of affection) were legendary and downright cute. But the couple has been dogged by rumors for the past few years that Miranda Lambert did not appreciate all the partying by Blake Shelton and it would inevitably lead to divorce. For once, the rumors were right.
Country superstars Shelton and Lambert announced on Monday that they are now divorced, four years after they were married in Texas before a throng of top country stars. According to reports, Shelton had secretly filed for divorce earlier this month in Oklahoma, his home state where they have a ranch. Oklahoma apparently lets people get divorced almost as fast as they get married, so there is no wait period. A judge made it officials Monday.
The couple then issued a statement. “This is not the future we envisioned. And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately,” it read. “We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
The divorce rumors were true. But, the reason for the split was not confirmed. However, there have been stories that Lambert, 31, had gotten tired of his partying (even on NBC’s The Voice, where Shelton is a judge/coach, there is a lot of joking about the drink in front of him each show and other drinking). A magazine article quoted a friend, “(Miranda’s) done with him humiliating her and is ready for him to grow up and get serious about their family’s future. I have no doubt that she’s leaving Blake if he doesn’t change.”
Even responding last year to another article saying the marriage was doomed, Shelton joked about his drinking. He tweeted: “Me and @mirandalambert are reading about our separation… S–!! I hope I get all the liquor in the divorce!!!”
There were also rumors of infidelities. However, Shelton has denied being unfaithful to Lambert (although, he was married to someone else when he met her and fell in love).
Just two days before the divorce was announced, but after it was filed, Lambert tried to keep a brave face at a concert in Wyoming, but broke down in tears when she started to sing a song Shelton had given her to record. She tearfully told the crowd, “No one wants to cry in front of 10,000 people.”
The couple reportedly had a pre-nuptial agreement, but it is actually in the last four years since they wed that their careers became red hot. During his four years on the singing competition The Voice, he has developed a broader audience and had several hits. He has also hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards each year during their marriage, proudly cheering on his wife at that competition, the Grammys and others as well as singing with her in numerous appearances.
Lambert and Shelton even won song of the year honors from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association for Lambert’s 2011 hit Over You, which was written about Shelton’s late brother. One of today’s top country music female artists, Lambert won the 2014 Academy of Country Music awards for female vocalist of the year and album of the year for Platinum.
The issue between them clearly was not career inequality (when one is successful and the other’s career flounders). So, their fans can only wonder if partying by Blake Shelton did lead to divorce from Miranda Lambert.
