Spike TV’s hit series, Lip Sync Battle, will be returning this Thursday, with brand-new episodes, the first one back featuring actress Alison Brie going head-to-head against actor and comedian, Will Arnett. The show’s host, rapper LL Cool J, has proven himself to be a witty and clever with his comments about each of the performances. He and his co-host, Chrissy Teigen, play off one another and their running commentary about how the celeb guests do helps add even more fun to the already entertaining series.
The format of Lip Sync Battle will remain basically the same, with LL Cool J there to explain the rules, do mini-interviews of the guests, and assist in the judging at the conclusion of each episode. The guests for the premier of the second half of the first season of Lip Sync Battle, Brie and Arnett, chose two songs that they will lip sync to and at the end of the episode, LL Cool J will ask the audience to applaud for the celeb they thought did the best job. The celeb who receives the most applause, as judged by LL Cool J, will be declared the winner and will get a Championship Belt to commemorate his or her victory.
The first song that celebs lip sync to on Lip Sync Battle is always a stripped-down version of the song. When performing the second one, however, the celeb guests can employ elaborate costumes, back-up dancers, and various props, all in the effort to win the studio audience over to their side and get them to vote with their applause later in the show.
Some of the costumes and performances so far this first season on Lip Sync Battle have been elaborate and often provocative, and — as this strategy has often proven to be effective — it will likely continue throughout the summer. Female celebs often have lip synced songs originally performed by male singers, and guys have sometimes cross-dressed and lip synced to songs made famous by female singers. One example of this was when actor John Krasinski dressed up in a silvery dress like Tina Turner occasionally wore and lip synced the song Proud Mary.
While both of the songs that Brie and Arnett will be lip syncing to on Lip Sync Battle have not been announced, one song that Brie will be performing to is Shoop. In Will Arnett’s case, one of the songs he will lip sync to is Everything Is Awesome, from The Lego Movie.
Brie is perhaps most famous for having played Trudy Campbell on Mad Men, though she has had several other memorable roles. For instance, Brie played Annie Edison in the sitcom, Community, and she provided the voices of Diane Nguyen / Olivia for the Netflix animated series, Bojack Horseman. In Scream 4, Brie was Rebecca Walters, and in The Lego Movie, she provided the voice of Unikitty.
Arnett has gained renown through numerous comedic roles, like playing George Oscar Bluth II (“G.O.B.”) in the hit Fox series Arrested Development. He also played Brent Wilts, Todd Margaret’s boss, in the hilarious expletive-laced TV series, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. Todd Margaret was played by one of his Arrested Development co-stars, David Cross.
In The Lego Movie, Arnett provided the voices of Batman / Bruce Wayne. He will reprise those roles in the 2017 sequel, The Lego Batman Movie.
The continuation of the first season of Lip Sync Battle this summer has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the series, and the lip sync battle between Arnett and Brie when the series returns this Thursday will probably gain the Spike TV hit even more legions of fans. Be sure to tune in and watch it Thursday, July 9 at 10:00 pm ET/PT and check back here to read a recap and review of it!
