Police Respond to Car Explosion in Downtown Savannah, Georgia [Update]

explosionOn Wednesday evening, law enforcement officials from the Savannah Metropolitan Police Department were notified about an apparent explosion in downtown Savannah, Georgia. The explosion occurred around 9:00 p.m. EST in front of the Hilton Garden Inn in Franklin Square in the heart of Savannah.

The vehicle that exploded was a white, late-model Ford F-150 pickup truck. Photos uploaded to social media by those near the scene show the bed of the pickup truck completely blown off. Cars near the explosion were seen riddled with shrapnel from the body of the truck.

A local media outlet has reported that the explosion was from flammable materials in the back of a work truck. According to initial reports, there were no injuries sustained by people in the area where the blast occurred. Police do not believe foul play was involved.

Police are continuing to respond to the scene to clear the debris and interview witnesses. Updates will be available once more information is reported as the event unfolds.

Authorities state hazmat crews are not needed for clean up. No chemicals are present that can cause harm to people.
