The U.S. has won their first game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup of 2015, beating Honduras in a 2-1 victory. The U.S. made numerous mistakes, but when the final whistle blew, they were the winners. There will be two games a night starting July 7, and then continuing through the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and the final game on July 26, which will determine the winner of the CONCACAF Gold Cup of 2015.
CONCACAF stands for the Confederation Of North Central America And Caribbean Football, and is held annually. The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 started with two games on Tuesday night in Frisco, Texas, at Toyota Stadium. Clint Dempsey scored both goals for the U.S., one in the twenty-fourth and one in the twenty-fifth minutes, which were made more special because Dempsey was in his hometown in Texas, which is also close to where he trained. Micheal Bradley, the team’s captain, crossed the ball toward the goal, and Dempsey was there each time to get the score. It was Bradley’s 100th international appearance. The Americans have won the past 13 opening games of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. Dempsey’s 43 international goals trail Landon Donovan’s 57 goals for the American record.
Carlos Discua scored late in the game for Honduras – at the 69th minute. Some reporters remarked upon how badly the U.S. team played, and while they did make their mistakes, they did win the game. They could not have been too bad on defense since they were able to keep Honduras from scoring for over an hour. Offensively, they got two goals in the first 30 minutes of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015. Honduras played a better game then the Americans, but they could not capitalize on the U.S.’ mistakes, which could have possibly allowed them to tie the game. The U.S. knows where they went wrong and what they have to work on, and they have five days to practice before they play again in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015.
Brad Guzan and Fabian Johnson held the defense together, and the U.S. was able to win their first game in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015. The U.S. will play Panama on Monday night, and will face Haiti on Friday, two teams which played to a tie on Tuesday night just before the U.S. and Honduras game. Guzan, the goalkeeper for the U.S., had some nice saves in the last few minutes of a game played in very humid weather. Bradley crossed the ball on a bounce and it hit the far post, after which the ball was juggled from player to player, but when the Honduras goalkeeper kicked the ball a few feet away from the goal, he popped it up at Dempsey, who was able to pop back in for a six-yard goal. The second goal for the U.S. happened off of a free kick by Bradley when Dempsey was able to jump inside and score from four yards out while the Honduras goalkeeper stayed on his line.
The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 was definitely exciting even with the mistakes, and it was nice to see the U S. pull out the win after a shaky start. The U.S. controlled the field for most of the second half, and was able to keep their opponents to only one goal even when they were flagged and Honduras was given a free kick. The Americans held their opponents off until the final whistle blew in the first game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015.
