At approximately 1:30 AM this morning, 10th District Commander Frank Valadez along with an officer assigned to the 10th district were on routine patrol when they observed shots being fired from a vehicle into an occupied vehicle near the corner of 23rd and Wood St.
The Commander and officer immediately pursued the vehicle to engage the shooter(s). Near the intersection of 19th and Ashland, the offending vehicle struck several parked cars and as officers attempted to intercept, the offenders purposefully reversed their vehicle to strike Cmdr. Valadez and the officer. At this point, the officers discharged their weapons striking at least one offender who continued to flee but was later apprehended after striking additional vehicles.
One of the occupants was unresponsive and additional subjects were located and brought to Area Central for further investigation. A handgun was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle.
Commander Valadez and the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. This matter remains under investigation and all further inquiries can be directed to the Independent Police Review
