True to his nature and overzealous personality, Kanye West may have displayed his ultimate embarrassing moment of all time. Of course, the first thought that comes to mind is the fact that there have been so many embarrassing moments for West, it may not be as simple as choosing just one most embarrassing moment. The Name Kanye West seems to have become synonymous with a huge self-serving ego. The self-declared greatest of all time in everything is quick to remind everyone of that regardless of their willingness to listen or agree. Although it may seem like a stretch to narrow down the list to just 5 of his most embarrassing moments, one thing is certain, the man definitely knows how to draw a crowd.
West has become famous for displaying poor sportsmanship and does not like second place or losing in anything. For someone that has enjoyed the spotlight in so many categories, it is easy to understand him being a sore loser. Yet, his display of contempt is perhaps revealed even more so when that loser happens to be someone else. During one of Wests’s more widely known embarrassing moments, he interrupted Taylor Swift while she was attempting to give an acceptance speech after winning the Best Female Video award at the MTV Music Awards in 2009. According to Kanye, Beyoncé actually had the best female video of all time. Of course in that moment he was the only one concerned or even in agreed to that statement.
The second account of the 5 most embarrassing moments for West involves an incident that took place at a concert in Sydney Australia. At one point during the show West stopped the music to entice fans to stand up however, when one person was obviously not going to comply, the influential rapper drew so much attention to him the crowd started to boo. West escalated the crowd when he stated, “…this is the longest I’ve had to wait to do a song, it’s unbelievable.” It then became obvious to West that the person was seated in a wheel chair. After which he continued the show.
Everyone at one time or another has said something that does not resonate well with the hearers. Most people learn from their mistakes and work hard to avoid awkward moments by changing words and phrases in subsequent and similar situations. Of course that is unless it is West. He has spoken on everything including politics, authors and the culture. One of his most recent off the wall quotes involves a potential run for the White House. During an acceptance speech at the Video Music Awards and after a comment about continuing to fight country music stars, came the big announcement, ” I have decided, in 2020, to run for President.” Many eye witnesses are not certain if it was a planned statement or an after thought, more importantly it raises the question, is he serious?
It has been the tradition for presidential candidates to use the platform to reveal their stand on important issues. As the United States is currently preparing for the 2016 presidential election, statements about several issues from candidates are issued every day. Therefore, in an effort to gain some insight into the potential presidential candidate’s ideas on some of the issues America faces, number four highlights a few of West’s lyrical quotes regarding gun violence, war, the main issue in America and pro drug reform.
- Main issue in America, “The system is broken, school’s closed, the prisons open” – Power (2010)
- Gun violence, “I feel the pain in my city wherever I go, 314 soldiers died in Iraq, 509 in Chicago” -Murder to Excellence (2011)
- Pro drug reform, “And if you’re losing your high then smoke again.” – Get ‘Em High (2004)
- His anti-war stand, “Been a don, praying for the families lost in the storm. Bring our troops back from Iraq, keep our troops out of Iran” – Power (Remix) (2010)
The various lyrics paint a picture of a man who pays attention and enables him to form and offer strong opinions. When Donald Trump was asked for his response to the announcement he said, “He’s a nice guy. I look forward to running against him one day.”
To round out this list of five most embarrassing moments for West, emphasis is placed on the foundation that the mega-star is constantly in an embarrassing moment. He continues to provide evidence of the notion that he is the king of all arrogant and self-centered artists in the music industry. He did it again! Storming the stage during the acceptance speech of Beck Hansen who won the Grammy for best album of the year. In what appeared to be a repeat of the Taylor Swift intrusion, instead of taking the microphone he turned and smiled as though it was a joke. However, he then proceeded to rant and rave back stage.
As a result, Shirley Manson posted a glaring response on Facebook to put him in his place. Her jolt to reality to the self absorbed star included statements such as, “…it is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry. You disrespect your own remarkable talents and….you disrespect the talent, hard work, and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like Beck.” The Garbage rocker goes on to say, “Grow up and stop throwing your toys around.” Wise words from a fellow artist attempting to help West see the error of his ways, however it remains to be seen just how much Mr. West heeded to the simplicity of her wisdom.
