Creating a follow-up album after unprecedented success is not easy for any artist, and expectations and anticipation for anything from Adele had fans “rolling in the deep.” However, the wait for fresh music ended Friday morning when Adele said Hello with a new single and a Nov. 20 release date for her next album.
The British singer released her new single, Hello, today, along with a music video for the emotional ballad. It is the first track off her forthcoming album and sets the tone for what she has said is a “make-up record.” The song is about reconnecting with a former love to figure out what happened and apologize for the split.
Hello starts slow and hesitant like an uncomfortable conversation. Then, Adele’s vocals build and so does the haunting sense of loss transmitted by the haunting lyrics and the pain conveyed in every word she sings. In the video for the song, she goes to the house she used to share with her ex and tries in vain to apologize for everything. She sings, “I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet/To go over everything/They say that times supposed to heal ya/But I ain’t done much healing.”
The album being released next month is called 25, keeping up the artist’s tradition of compilations of songs that reflect a time period in her life (like 2011’s 21 album and 2008’s 19). However, the now 27-year-old has indicated that she may stop the practice the next time around. She noted on Apple Music’s Beats 1, “I think this will be my last age one,” she said. “I feel like there’s been a massive change in me in the last couple of years. Having become a parent, and me and all my friends suddenly living grown-up lives and having responsibilities we haven’t had before,” she added.
Adele has indicated that the new album will have a different tone, emotionally. “My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one, I would call it a make-up record,” the Grammy-winning artist wrote in a letter to fans on Twitter. “Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did.”
She also reflected in the message on the impact the title age had on her. “Turning 25 was a turning point for me, slap bang in the middle of my twenties. Teetering on the edge of being an old adolescent and a fully fledged adult.”
Adele has also apologized to fans for the delay between albums. Her Oscar-winning title track for the James Bond flick Skyfall did come out during the interlude, but it was on the soundtrack, not an Adele album. As she put it, “I’m sorry it took so long but, you know, life happened.”
The fact that she planned to name the album 25 was hinted at when she turned 26 last year. Adele tweeted, at the time, “Bye bye 25 … See you again later in year,” suggesting that she would revisit the age in 2015. Fans who rushed to buy her new single Hello today will undoubtedly be glad she did and look forward to saying hello to the rest of Adele’s new music.
