Wave City Care’s (WCC) annual Shine5K is more than a crawl, walk or run. It is an opportunity to impact the lives of adults, youth and families in the community with a variety of local races to raise funds for Wave City Care and the organization’s great programs. This year WCC has added its first annual Glitter Dash 1K fun run where kids and adults are encouraged to run in their best glittery running gear! The entire Shine5K supports the local community non-profit, Wave City Care, and proudly features its ShineGIRL program.
The aim of the ShineGIRL mentoring program is to empower girls of all ages to develop an understanding of her own personal worth, strength, and purpose. ShineGIRL’s curriculum is filled with solutions-focused personal development programs that empower teen girls and women. The goal is to help individuals on their journey of discovering their personal value, resilience, worth, strength and purpose, and to realize the potential that lies within her to fulfill her goals and aspirations in life. It reinforces that every individual is unique and emphasizes the need to celebrate their different strengths, qualities, and skills.
WCC has a similar program called ManPOWER. Guys need men around them that will tell them they have significance, show them that they can be resilient and model courage for them. The ManPOWER program focuses on teaching boys how to be real men, with real courage, using real influence and real power who are able to achieve real success in this world. It is a unique personal development program with an inspirational, practical and experiential approach to learning. It is designed to reach middle school boys and is founded on the premise that every life counts and has intrinsic value. It helps teens to be effective global citizens for the future.
Both of these mentoring programs partner with the Virginia Beach and Norfolk School Systems, local clubs and organizations. The curriculum dares this generation to leave the overly trodden path of mediocrity and blaze adventurous new trails that will push each of them to want to explore all of their abilities and squeeze out every contribution they could possibly make for the good of society. It is a difficult challenge, but living up to it will cause new footprints that are both deep enough for others to follow and correctly aligned so as to lead them in the right direction. The theme of each session is:
Every one of us is valuable, no matter what we have been through. Our uniqueness is something to celebrate! We have been wonderfully made! We explore the power of our choices and the power that our decisions have on shaping our future. This is addressed through discussions about respect, will power, convictions, boundaries, and confidence. We discover our hopes, dreams, and desires. Discussion on potential, talents and goal setting will help build the confidence needed to live out an adventurous life.
WCC is improving the lives of individuals by providing help and healing for the release of the best in human potential. The mission of this non-profit organization is to equip, empower and educate the community with basic care services, educational programs, health and human services including addiction recovery. WCC’s concentration centers on meeting the needs of the whole family.
The Shine5K is one of WCC’s largest fundraisers which could not be possible without the help of several sponsors who have joined efforts to help build and strengthen the community. Some of these champions include Towne Bank, Shupert Law, Hammer Fitness and Sports Performance, Duck Donuts, Seventh Point Marketing, 106.9 The Fox and J & A Racing. Anyone interested in joining this team of sponsors or has a desire to support a team or individual in the race can do so at www.shine5k.com.
All participants should arrive early to purchase face painting or “glitter spray down” and be sure to get a raffle ticket for the chance to win a great prize! Participants will feel empowered as they navigate through a custom glitter course featuring stations focused on “Worth, Strength, and Purpose.” Official timing for the race will be provided by J&A Racing. After the official run has ended there will be additional family fun including raffle prizes, a live broadcast, and sounds by DJ from 106.9 The Fox.
The Shine5K starts on the track but does not stop there. This event continues to impact and enhance the quality of life for many in need within the community. This run will be held at Mt. Trashmore on Saturday, July 9. This city park is located at 310 Edwin Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
