FX’s occult hit “The Strain” has easily become one of the network’s strongest contenders in its late-night time slot. After a year-long hiatus, the show will make its triumphant return later in the summer. This first season alone made “The Strain” one of the network’s top performers in ratings. Though the soap-opera element of the second season and slow story progression saw a slight decrease in viewership, the show still ranked in a total of over two million viewers (about 1.02 million in the 18-49 age demographic). With a slight downward slope in ratings, it seemed questionable if the season was going to make a return. Fortunately for fans, “The Strain” released its latest trailer for season three and, from the looks of it, it seems that it is bringing in more action and returning to the horror-theme that brought the first season such critical acclaim.
When “The Strain” first premiered, creators Guillermo Del Toro and Carlton Cuse delivered something that the network had never showcased before. Bringing the pages of their graphic novel to life, the writers were able to bring in a modernized telling of a mythological horror tale involving a vampire epidemic hitting New York City. First mistaken as a plague by the CDC, protagonists Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and colleague Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) investigate to find out that it is something far more sinister and severe.
A mix between a conspiracy by an illustrious multibillionaire Eldritch Palmer (Johnathan Hyde) and ancient evil that goes by the dubious name The Master. Quickly, the plan to find out what is happening in the city deteriorates into an epidemic that leaves most of New York City into a panic and a war zone. Along the way, the group becomes a larger as they enlist the help of bystanders to fight these creatures that start overrunning abandoned parts of the city. The group includes an elderly man who serves as the Van Helsing of the group. A computer hacker who is seeking redemption for blacking out NYC’s internet. A vampire and human hybrid names Quinlan, who easily became a fan-favorite. Also an Eastern European exterminator, who acts as the muscle of the group and Van Helsing’s second in command.
For the past two years, the team has spent multiple episodes tracking down The Master to end the turmoil that the creature has caused in just a short period of time. After the end of the last season, the group was practically disbanded. The hacker decided to explore a happy ending with her on-again, off-again estranged girlfriend. Nora ends up sacrificing herself after losing a battle with Eph’s son Zach’s mother-turned-creature. The loss of both Nora and Zach led Eph to strike out on his own to pursue The Master with more aggression and focus than ever before.
Carrying off with a slight time gap, the latest season of “The Strain” carries off 23 days after where the second season left viewers. The city is in even more turmoil and now the epidemic has spread around the world. With the group’s resistance put to a halt, more continue to suffer and more creatures are popping up everywhere. More than just focusing on the main heroes from the previous seasons, it appears that this third season may bring in some new fighters against “The Strain.” Fans will also be pleased to see more Quinlan.
