Women around the world suffer monthly from the debilitating discomfort of painful menstrual cramps. Many have found little to no sustainable relief from over-the-counter medicines such as Midol, Advil, and Motrin. Now, a company named Foria may have the remedy in their surprising new product that merges cannabis and suppositories to create marijuana tampons.
Mathew Gerson, the founder of Foria, initially studied Tibetan Buddhism with the aspirations of becoming a monk. However, once he made the transition from Colorado to California and realized the benefits medical cannabis had on his relatives and friends suffering from cancer and Crohn’s Disease he was exposed to a positive side of a plant stigmatized as countercultural. Gerson began to question whether these positive effects were transferable to sexual experiences and before long he committed his efforts to promoting good health and well-being in the form of Foria.
The company uses three products, which are cocoa butter, distilled THC Oil and CBD Isolate. The active cannabinoid compounds THC and CBD combine to interact with the muscles and nerves resulting in less painful periods. THC lowers the pain and encourages “good brain vibes” while CBD helps the nerves and muscles relax. According to the company’s site:
These suppositories maximize the muscle relaxing and pain relieving properties of cannabis without inducing a psychotropic ‘high.’
Reports from users of the marijuana tampons have been quite favorable. Retired gynecologist Morton Barke reported that cannabis use for periods is not unheard of. Although not mentioned in 20th century medical literature, reportedly in the 19th century, cannabis was one of the biggest medical uses as a treatment for the reduction of labor pain as well as menstrual cramps. When questioned about the latest marijuana creation, Barke said:
We know that cannabis does help pain. We do see a lot of patients with dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea is painful menstrual periods. It’s a fantastic modality to help patients.
Cannabis was reportedly prescribed for England’s Queen Victoria in the 1890’s by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Queen’s royal physician. Marijuana does not block pain in the same manner as opiates; instead, it reduces awareness of the pain. Additionally, cannabis has the ability to relax muscles that cause menstrual cramps.
Foria is not new to marijuana enhanced products. The company, well-known for its popular marijuana-infused personal lubricant called Foria Pleasure, is now seeking to help ease the pain of menstrual cramps. Foria Pleasure is an all-natural sensual enhancement oil that is a blend of liquid coconut oil and lab-tested cannabis oil. The concept of the pleasure oil derives from ancient traditions of cannabis as a natural aphrodisiac. Foria Pleasure benefits the health and well-being of women by opening the door to natural, euphoric pleasure. According to the company’s site:
Foria Pleasure harnesses the complex powers of marijuana to promote relaxation and increase blood flow thereby creating a potent therapeutic aphrodisiac.
The newest induction into the cannabis hall of fame is the marijuana tampon called Foria Relief. The vaginal suppositories cost $44 for a pack of four. However, in honor of International Female Orgasm Day, consumers who purchase by August 15 will receive 5 milliliters of the product Pleasure for free. The marijuana tampons are only available for residents of Colorado and California who have a medical marijuana card or letter of recommendation from their physician.
The primary reason for the creation of marijuana tampons, according to Foria, is to relieve pain and share the powerful medicinal properties of the cannabis plant. Each serving contains 60 mg of THC and 10 mg of CBD. The vaginal suppository format helps deliver the medicine directly to the area it is needed most. Foria created a suppository rather than a pill in order to channel the medicine to the exact area in need.
