Pep Guardiola Won the First Derby of Manchester in Premier League


On Sept. 10, 2016, Pep Guardiola won the first derby of Manchester in the 2016-17 Premier League season. At the Old Trafford Stadium, Manchester City defeated Manchester United, the team coached by Jose Mourinho. The score was 1-2.

Kevin de Bruyne gave his team the advantage when he scored after only 15 minutes into the game. Kelechi Iheanacho scored 20 minutes later, securing the victory for Guardiola’s crew.

A few minutes before halftime, Zlatan Ibrahimovic managed to reduce the score difference, by achieving his first goal for Manchester United, in the derby. However, in the second half, neither City nor United succeeded in modifying the scoreboard.

As of this report, Manchester City is the ranking leader of the Premier League. The team won all four matches, in the current season, scoring 11 goals and receiving only four. The crew, managed by Mourinho, occupies the 3rd position, after winning the first three games.

City’s First Victory Since 2014

Guardiola obtained his first victory in a Manchester’s derby. Therefore, breaking Manchester City’s negative record. The team has not won a derby against United since 2014.

The game that took place on September 10, at the Old Trafford Stadium, was the 163rd derby between the two teams. A neutral ground hosted two matches, 79 derbies took place at the Etihad Stadium, and the Old Trafford Stadium held the other 83 games.

Derby Statistics

According to Manchester City Mad, Guardiola’s crew obtained their 46th victory on September 10, while United has won 67 derbies. The other 50 games ended with a draw.

Moreover, even though they lost their first derby of the 2016-17 Premier League season, the players of Mourinho have scored 236 times overall. Their opponents succeeded to put the ball in the net 220 times.

The match was the first city derby for the managers Guardiola and Mourinho. Guardiola started in the Premier League this season, while Mourinho made his third appearance, after coaching Chelsea between 2004-2007 and 2013-2015.

2016-17 Premier League

Guardiola won the first derby of Manchester in the 2016-17 Premier League season. It is a significant victory as the British journalists consider that six teams are favored to win the competition’s trophy. According to BBC, the most powerful crews of the 2016-17 Premier League season are Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham.

Premier League is the primary soccer tournament of the United Kingdom, found at the top of the English football league system. The current season is the 25th for the competition, since its formation in 1992.

As of this report, three stages are completed and the fourth is still running. The Manchester derby was the first match of the current stage. The other results registered on September 10, are:

  • Arsenal 2-1 Southampton
  • Bournemouth 1-0 West Brom
  • Burnley 1-1 Hull
  • Middlesbrough 1-2 Crystal Palace
  • Stoke 0-4 Tottenham
  • West Ham 2-4 Watford
  • Liverpool 4-1 Leicester

Two more games will take place in the next days, to complete the stage:

  • Swansea – Chelsea, on September 11, at 10:00 a.m. PDT.
  • Sunderland – Everton, on September 12, at 14:00 p.m. PDT.
