The San Antonio Spurs eliminated the Memphis Grizzlies, 103-96, Thursday, April 27, 2017, at the FedEx Forum. The Spurs win their first-round series 4-2 and move on to the second round.
The game was close and contentious in the first half. The Spurs finished the first quarter leading by two points; 24-22. The Grizzlies played a tough inside game, in the second period, to go into halftime leading — 50-45.
The second half began with the Grizzlies pushing the lead to 10. They were up 57-47 with nine minutes left in the third. San Antonio went on a 15-3 run to take the lead; 73-69. The Spurs played well, on the inside, in the third, getting many second-chance points by outrebounding the Grizzlies in the period.
The teams continued their competitive play into the final quarter. Memphis retook the lead almost immediately and went on a 14-6 run in the first part of the fourth to extend the lead to seven points; 88-81. San Antonio fought back and closed to within one, 88-87, with 5:12 remaining.
The next four minutes were witness to a 15-4 run by the Spurs. They took the lead 92-90 on a three-point shot by Kawhi Leonard with 2:55 left in the contest. San Antonio went on to extend the lead to six points, 100-94, with under a minute left.
The valiant Grizzlies were led in scoring by guard, Mike Conley, who played superbly and put in 26 points. Zach Randolph contributed 11 rebounds for Memphis in the losing effort.
The Spurs were led by their MVP candidate, Kawhi Leonard, who scored 29 points. Tony Parker had his best game of the series putting in 27 points. The Spurs have now eliminated the Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs two consecutive seasons.
