US Army Ordered Additional Counterfire Radar

The U.S. Army ordered additional AN/TPQ-53 counterfire radar systems, as announced by Lockheed Martin at 8:08 ET, April 24, 2017. Per a $1.6 billion order-dependent contract, Lockheed Martin will produce more of the AN/TPQ-53 systems, specifically designed to protect soldiers by counteracting enemy fire.

Sites for indirect enemy fire can be discovered, classified, tracked, and identified with the AN/TPQ-53. The radar system works to support troops in combat. It has the ability of either a 90 or 360-degree mode, the AN/TPQ-53 aids troops by locating possible enemy threats around them.

The radar system has a software structure that allows for it to be updated for new types of dangers, as detailed by Rick Herodes, director of Lockheed Martin’s AN/TPQ-53 radar program.

Our engineers can adjust the Q-53’s software to address emerging threats. Having control in the software allows quick reaction to whatever comes next.

New enemy threats come from the ground and air; the AN/TPQ-53 system is designed with one tactical sensor that can be adjusted easily. The sensor can provide for air surveillance and discovering targets on ground for counterfire. With a system that can be moved swiftly by a two-man team, soldiers use the devices to counteract the enemy during battle.

The AN/TPQ-53 systems have been in production since Lockheed Martin received the first development contract in 2007. The company has signed five more contracts and has completed over 100 radar systems. The Army has received 95 of those systems. This most recent contract will increase the Army’s total AN/TPQ-53, to over 170.
