The Boston Celtics were victorious in game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, eliminating the Washington Wizards, 115-105, Monday, May 15, 2017. The deciding game took place at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
Game 7 nerves were on display for both teams at the start of the contest. The only scoring for the first 3 minutes were three free-throws by the Celtics. The Wizards were only 1 of 6 shooting, after four minutes.
The second part of the first period saw both teams shake off the nerves. The Celtics and Wizards were tied twice. The quarter finished with Boston leading by four; 27-23.
The competitive fervor of both teams came alive in the second quarter. The Celtics led for most of the period. The pace was fast and furious, especially in the final two and a half minutes. There were two ties and three lead changes in those final moments. The Wizards stormed ahead and finished the half leading 55-53.
The Wizards came out after halftime shooting well and made six of their first seven baskets to claim a 70-64 lead. They held the lead until just over a minute left in the third quarter. The Celtics stormed back to take a three-point lead, 82-79, with 1:01 remaining. Boston finished the third with a 13-3 run, in the final two minutes and led 85-79 after three-quarters.
Boston kept the lead throughout the final stanza, though Washington made it a close game; within four points twice. The Celtics reserve Kelly Olynyk sparked a mid-quarter run, scoring 13 of his 26 points in the fourth. This put Boston ahead by as much as 10 points, 110-100, with 3:25 remaining.
The Wizards fought valiantly, but could not overcome the deficit. Their high-scorer was guard Bradley Beal. He had a career-playoff high of 38 points.
The Celtics were led by their star guard Isaiah Thomas with 29 points and a game-high 12 assists.
Boston now moves on to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. They will face off for game-1 in Boston on Wednesday, May 17, at the TD Garden.
