Florida Defeats TCU to Join LSU in College World Series Finals


The Florida Gators defeated the TCU Horned Frogs, 3-0, to join the LSU Tigers in the College World Series finals, Saturday, June 24, 2017, at the TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska. This contest was the second of two elimination games on Saturday.

Starting pitcher, for Texas Christian University, Jared Janczak started strong, striking out two of the first three Gators in the top of the first inning. Florida’s starter Alex Faedo pitched a scoreless first, giving up a single to Evan Skoug with two outs. Cam Warner followed with a ground-out to first base to end the inning.

Florida struck first in the top of the second inning. Austin Langworthy smoked a double, down the third-base line. Jonathan India blooped a single to left field, and a good throw kept Langworthy at third base. The next batter, Mike Rivera hit a hot ground ball to second base and Langworthy scored. TCU failed to score in the bottom of the inning and finished with Florida leading, 1-0.

Florida short stop Dalton Guthrie appeared to injure his back in the first inning. He recorded a strike-out in the top of the third and limped back to the dugout. He was replaced by Blake Reese. There was no scoring in the third inning.

The Gators came through again in the top of the fifth inning. Catcher Rivera was hit by a pitch and scored after Christian Hicks doubled. The next three batters all recorded outs and Hicks was stranded at second base. They held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the inning. TCU was held scoreless in the fifth.

Gators hitter Hicks slammed a one-out triple in the top of the seventh. He scored when Deacon Liput hit a freak single that bounced off of first base. Faedo kept the Horned Frogs scoreless in the bottom of the inning and Florida led 3-0 after seven innings.

TCU replaced starter Janczak with reliever Durbin Feltman at the top of the eighth inning. He struck out the side. After a one-out single, by Austen Wade for the Horned Frogs, Florida pulled starter Faedo for closer Michael Byrne. Zach Humphreys singled to right field and TCU had players on first and second with one out. The next two batters recorded a strike-out and fly-ball out, ending the Horned Frogs’ threat to score. The Gators held TCU scoreless in the ninth to finish the game with a win.

The star of the game was Florida starter Faedo. He struck out 12 TCU batters and claimed the shut-out victory. He has pitched 22 scoreless innings in the 2017 College World Series.

Louisiana State University beat Oregon State, 6-1, in the earlier game to claim the first spot in the finals. Florida will face off against LSU in the first, of a best-of-three final, series on Monday, June 26, in Omaha.
