Katy Perry has now taken her album “Witness” to the top of sales, on NetEase Cloud Music in China, as reported by PR Newswire on June 23, 2017, at 9:55 ET.
Just 10 days since the album’s release in China, 1.4 million songs have been sold on music services in the country. NetEase Cloud Music reports the selling of 560,000 songs; 40 percent of the sales from the Perry “Witness” album.
In a fresh approach to garner sales, NetEase Cloud Music issued a promotion along with the release of the album. The “Buy the Album and Get a Fruit” campaign offers fans a free fruit package when purchasing “Witness.”
This is a shout out to the Ms. Fruit nickname that Chinese fans have given to Perry, paying homage to her fruit garnished fashion. The fruit marketing strategy worked to attract more fans for Perry, as reported by the music service.
NetEase Cloud Music also showcased the album as a recommendation in their new column inciting fans to comment about the songstress.
“Chained to the Rhythm,” the first single from “Witness,” had been released by the music service ahead of the album. More than 30,000 comments have been received for just the song.
Perry continues worldwide chart-topping sales with “Witness.” The album has reached global sales of 180,000, after a debut on the U.S. Billboard chart at number one. This is her third album to reach the top of the chart. Perry previously made it to number one with “Prism” in 2013, and “Teenage Dream” in 2010.
In its first week, “Witness” sold 162,000 physical copies, while it sold 19 million more through streaming. With the year being halfway through, Perry is the second woman, after Halsey, in 2017 to make it to the top of the chart with an album.
