ShineWave City Care (WCC) is hosting their fourth annual “Super” Shine 5K and Glitter Dash 1K, held Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, Va. This year’s theme is “SuperHeroes!” The 5K Race begins at 8:00 am and the 1K Fun Run at 9:15 am. Registration for the 5K includes an event t-shirt (early registers only), Finisher’s medal, and refreshments at the finish line! Glitter Dash participants receive a Finisher’s medal. Bring out the entire family for a morning of fun!

Wave City Care is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit serving the Hampton Roads area since 2002. WCC’s annual Shine5K is more than a crawl, walk or run. It is an opportunity to empower the community through a variety of local races created to raise funds for the organization’s great programs.

ShineGirl, Man POWER, 1Life Mentoring, Jobs for Life Training, Regeneration Recovery Support (Addiction and Recovery program) and Healthy Living Food Distribution are all programs designed to support the lives of adults, youth, and families in the community. WCC also provides local School Makeovers, Thanksgiving Baskets, and a huge Christmas Extravaganza. Wave City Care believes that there is a “SuperHero” in everyone and that we need to recognize and utilize our “Super Powers” for good in our community.

ShineGIRL and Man POWER are two unique mentoring programs offered in local public schools in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA, for adolescent youth, grades 5 through 12. ShineGIRL, for girls, and Man POWER, for boys are 12-Shineweek mentoring programs offered every fall, spring, and summer with an emphasis on middle school youth. Currently, approximately 80 volunteer mentors facilitate these programs to inspire and equip youth with skills to discover who they are and want to become.

ShineGIRL is founded on the premise that every life counts, has intrinsic value and is filled with purpose. Positive self-esteem is vital in the development of a girl’s healthy personality and is a major key to success in life. The 12-week curriculum covers three concepts of self-esteem: Worth, Strength, and Purpose. Girls develop the understanding that they each have something to contribute and can SHINE beyond their potential!

Man POWER, for the boys, uses fun interactive lessons that teach valuable life skills to improve young men’s knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs towards what it really means to be a man in today’s society. The 12-week Shinecurriculum focuses on four concepts: Real Men, Real Power, Real Influence, and Real Success. Man POWER’s vision is to empower, encourage and inspire young men to realize their full potential.

Both of these mentoring programs collaborate with the Virginia Beach and Norfolk School Systems, local clubs and organizations. The curriculum dares this generation to leave the overly trodden path of mediocrity and blaze adventurous new trails that will push each of them to want to explore all of their abilities and squeeze out every contribution they could possibly make for the good of society. It is a difficult challenge, but living up to it will cause new footprints that are both deep enough for others to follow and correctly aligned to lead them in the right direction. The theme of each session is:

Every one of us is valuable, no matter what we have been through. Our uniqueness is something to celebrate! We have been wonderfully made! We explore the power of our choices and the power that our decisions have on shaping our future. This is addressed through discussions about respect, will power, convictions, boundaries, and confidence. We discover our hopes, dreams, and desires. Discussion on potential, talents and goal setting will help build the confidence needed to live out an adventurous life.

WCC is improving the lives of individuals by providing assistance and healing for the release of the best in human potential. The mission of this non-profit organization is to equip, empower, and educate the community with basic care services, educational programs, health and human services including addiction recovery. WCC’s concentration centers on meeting the needs of the whole family.

The Super Shine5K is one of WCC’s largest fundraisers which could not be possible without the help of several sponsors who have joined efforts to help build and strengthen the community.  Anyone interested in joining this team of sponsors or has a desire to support a team or individual in the race can do so at www.shine5k.com.Shine

All participants should arrive early to purchase face painting or “glitter spray down” and be sure to get a raffle ticket for the chance to win a great prize! Participants will feel empowered as they navigate through a custom glitter course featuring stations focused on “Worth, Strength, and Purpose.” Official timing for the race will be provided by J&A Racing. After the official run has ended there will be additional family fun including raffle prizes, a live broadcast, and sounds by DJ from 106.9 The Fox.

The Super Shine5K starts on the track but does not stop there. The proceeds of this event will continue to influence and enhance the quality of life for many in need within the community. Grab some friends and come out and run as a team or make new friends by joining a team.  Kids AND adults are encouraged to let their inner SuperHero out by donning a SuperHero Cape or a glittery ShineGIRL tutu.

The run will be held on July 8, 2017, at Virginia Wesleyan College, located at 5817 Wesleyan Drive, Virginia Beach, Va. 23455. For additional information please visit www.shine5k.com, email info@wavecitycare.com or call 757-965-8494.
