Ronnie Wood, guitarist for The Rolling Stones, revealed his fight with lung cancer in an interview with Daily Mail’s Event magazine. After three months, Wood finally opened up about his touch-and-go experience.
The cancerous lesion was discovered in May, while members of The Rolling Stones were undergoing routine physical exams in preparation for their upcoming European tour. During the exam, conducted by Dr. Richard Dawood, Wood asked to have his blood, heart and lungs checked.
Wood was not surprised when the doctor came back with news of an illness, specifically cancer, found in his lungs. “And then he came back with the news that I had this supernova burning away on my left lung. And, to be totally honest, I wasn’t surprised. I knew I hadn’t had a chest X-ray since I went into Cottonwood [a rehab clinic in Tucson, Arizona] in 2002.”
Although Wood had a previous history with cigarettes, he quit smoking almost a week before his twin daughters were born in May 2016. However, he was prepared for the bad news. He said he was not surprised after a lifetime of smoking and other bad habits, it was anticipated.
After discovering the lesion, Wood underwent a week of testing to ensure the cancer had not spread to his lymph nodes. His wife Sally Humphreys said, waiting for the test results was “the worst seven days of her life.”
Before the results came back, Wood had made up his mind to not go through chemotherapy if the cancer had spread. He stated, “I wasn’t going to use that bayonet in my body.” Although, the decision was mainly centered around the fear he would lose his hair. Fortunately, the tests did not reveal any signs the cancer had spread.
Dr. Daewood asked how Wood wanted to proceed, and he responded, “Just get it out of me!” He underwent 5 hours of surgery to remove the cancerous lesion and a portion of his lung, which went smoothly.
Wood has to have a checkup every three months for any changes. He is relieved and said, “I was bloody lucky, but then I’ve always had a very strong guardian angel looking out for me. By rights I shouldn’t be here.”
Wood will join The Rolling Stones for the No Filter European tour on Sept. 9, 2017.
