The Good, Bad, and Ugly Video Games of 2017

As 2017 wraps up and comes to a rocky end, with a whirlwind of politics and Trump praising himself, gamers unite inside their gaming caves. Whether the games were good, bad, or ugly, they helped gamers ignore the world around them. Only coming out of their self-induced stupor for, food, drink, and bathroom use, sometimes not even then.

So, what were the best and worse games of 2017? Well, that can be debated by many, and how does one know for sure that the games others claim to be the best are the right for them? They do not. Gamers prefer different genres. Some, like anime and action adventure, or action role-playing games (RPG). Others, like shooter games. Yet, many like a mix of them all. There is not a way to say which games are more popular than others. Once the game is purchased, the player may find that they do not like the game and return it to buy another.

The Good Games

“Uncharted: The Lost Legacy” came out in August 2017. The action adventure game was developed by Naughty Dog, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, for the PlayStation 4 and is exclusive to PS4 as is all of the Uncharted series.

However, this is the first in the series that does not feature Nathan Drake as its protagonist. Instead, the game follows Chloe Frazer who is seeking the Tusk of Ganesh in the mountains of India, during a civil war. She is assisted in her quest by archrival Nadine Ross and Nathan’s brother, Sam Drake.

“Uncharted: The Lost Legacy,” is a third-person shooter. Gameplay includes firearms, melee combat, and stealth in campaign mode. The game offers a multiplayer option, in which they can play solo, or with four of their friends in Team Deathmatch, Ranked, Bounty Hunter, King of the Hill, Plunder, and Command gameplay.

“Horizon Zero Dawn” came out in early 2017. The RPG was developed by Guerrilla Games, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, for the PlayStation 4. Again, this game is a PS4 exclusive. It is set in an open-world environment with large maps, which allows the player to explore the main story while taking on side quests, and there are a ton of them.

The plot is centered around the protagonist, Aloy. She is a hunter and archer who is living in a world that has been overrun by robots. The player sees through cutscenes that since Aloy was a youngster she has been an outcast. Through her training and the players, Aloy becomes a fierce fighter and trained archer. When she is old enough to fend for herself she leaves to discover the dangers she has been sheltered from.

“Horizon Zero Dawn” is a single player game. Gameplay includes ranged weapons, a spear, and stealth, and of course Aloy’s bow and arrow. When she kills a mechanized creature, she is able to loot it for resources to trade or build weapons. There is a skill tree, which provides the player with new abilities and passive bonuses.

“Assassin’s Creed Origins” came out on Oct. 27, 2017. The action-adventure, stealth game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, and published by Ubisoft, for Microsft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is the tenth installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and successor to the 2015 game, “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.”

Set in Egypt during the Ptolemaic period, 48 BC, it recounts the secret, fictional history, of real-world events. It tells the story of the origins of the centuries-long conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins, who are known to fight for peace by promoting liberty.

“Assassin’s Creed Origins” is a single-player game in third-person perspective. Gameplay includes firearms and swords. However, the biggest part of the game is stealth. As the main character, the gamer sneaks up behind the enemy(s) and use melee or break their necks.

Like “Horizon Zero Dawn,” players will experience a large world map, which they can roam on foot, horseback, camelback, or by boat. Players can either freely roam the open-world or they can complete quests, to unlock weapons and equipment.

The eagle vision mode has been replaced by Bonelli’s eagle, named Senu, as a companion. Gamers can take control of Senu and scout an area in advance, and highlight the enemies to make them visible to Bayek, the main character. Another new and fun aspect of the game is players can tame predators, making them their companion and assists them against enemies.

The Bad Games

“Call of Duty: WWII” (COD WWII) came out on Nov. 3, 2017. The first-person shooter game was developed by Sledgehammer Games, and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is the fourteenth installment in the Call of Duty series.

The game is set in the European theatre and centered around a squad in the 1st Infantry Division, following their battles on the Western Front. It is set during the historical events of Operation Overlord.

“Call of Duty: WWII” is both a single-player campaign mode and multiplayer online game. However, the multiplayer version adds to the historical events of Operation Overlord that is not seen in the campaign.

There is also a Zombie mode, which has been popular from its inception. As with the Uncharted series, gameplay includes firearms, melee combat, and stealth. As a player advances in the game, they are able to upgrade to more deadly weapons.

“Star Wars: Battlefront II” came out on Nov. 17, 2017. The first and third-person shooter game was developed by EA DICE, and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is the fourth major installment of the Star Wars: Battlefront series.

The game features Iden Versio, who is being interrogated for the codes to unlock an Imperial transmission aboard a Rebel Mon Calamari Star Cruiser. Iden allowed herself to be captured so that she could erase the Imperial transmission, which would reveal the Emperor’s plan at Endor. While she is held captive she activates her droid, which sneaks into her cell and frees her, allowing her to be successful at erasing the transmission. She then escapes the ship and launches herself into space.

Unlike the 2015’s Battlefront, “Star Wars: Battlefront II’s” features a full story mode campaign and is single player. Gamers can customize their characters and weapons. In story mode the player, during different segments in the campaign, can switch between Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren.

The game also has an arcade mode, which is an offline single-player or local co-op. The gamers can choose which side and battle to play. Furthermore, they can also play a custom match. This is where they can change some of the settings and location. The game also features five multiplayer game modes. The largest of which supports 40 simultaneous players.

“Destiny 2” came out on Sep. 6, 2017. The game is an online-only multiplayer first-person shooter game. It was developed by Bungie and published by Activision for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, a month later the Microsoft version was released. The game is the sequel to the 2014 “Destiny.”

The game is set in a mythic science fiction world. One year after the SIVA Crisis, Vabal forces of the Red Legion launch an aerial assault on the Last City. They destroy the main portion of the Tower, which is the Guardians headquarters. After the attack the player is thrown from the ship, then two days later the Guardian locates the Ghost and finds a haven, The Farm, located in the European Dead Zone.

“Destiny 2” is not like most story mode or RPG games since it is a completely online experience. The players share the world environment and assume the role of the Guardian, protector of the Earth’s last safe city. The hero wields a power called the Light to help protect the Last City from alien races like the Cabel. Each class has different perks, upgrades, special abilities, and three sub-classes that allow players to finely tune their character.

The Ugly Games

The early release of “Fortnite” came out on July 25, 2015, with a full free-to-play upload. The real release is expected sometime in 2018. The survival game was developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly, and published by Epic Games, for Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The game is set in contemporary Earth where the sudden appearance of a worldwide storm causes 98 percent of the world’s population to disappear. Zombie-like creatures rise and attack the remainder of the those that are living.

“Fortnite” is both a single-player and multiplayer game, giving the gamer the choice to play solo or with up to four friends on various missions on randomly generated maps, to collect resources, build fortifications around defensive objects, and construct weapons and traps to engage in combat. When dropped into a map the last player standing wins the game.

“The Walking Dead: A New Frontier” came out on Feb. 7, 2017. The episodic graphic adventure game was developed and published by Telltale Games for Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The game coincides with events of the comic book, in which a zombie apocalypse has occurred. As fans know, once a human dies or is bitten by a zombie they turn into one. The game is set four years after the beginning of the apocalypse. The protagonist of the game is Javier Garcia, who is a former professional baseball player.

“The Walking Dead: A New Frontier” is a single-player point and click adventure game. In this game, players have a choice between two playable characters, Clementine, the heroine from the previous games, and Javier, the newest character introduced this season.

Gamers can move their character around the environment and interact or examine various scenery elements as they collect and use objects to advance the story. The player can also talk with non-player characters via conversation trees, which offers multiple choice answers for them to choose from. This means that the players choice and actions impact the story elements in later episodes.

“Injustice 2” came out in November 2017. The fighting game was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.

The game is set five years after Superman’s defeat, so Batman and his collaborators try to put the world back together. But, there is a new villainous faction called the Society, led by Gorilla Grodd, which emerges and is out for world domination. Batman forms a new team to combat them, made up of Black Canary, an alternate Green Arrow, and Harly Quinn.

“Injustice 2” is both a single and multiplayer game. Players can compete one-on-one in combat using characters from the DC Universe and other third-party franchises. Game-play includes the use of different combinations of directional input and button presses, which perform basic attacks, special moves, and combos to try and damage and knock out the opposing fighter. The new game introduces a loot-dropping system called the Gear System. This system uses RPG-like mechanics that rewards players with experience and loot after each match.
