A new effort to divide California into multiple states is underway. “New California” would be split into coastal cities and rural areas, because it is the most populated state.
Founders Robert Preston and Tom Reed read their own Declaration of Independence on Jan. 16, 2018, according to KOVR-TV. They hosted a small ceremony in Marysville, California. They claim the state is not governable because the taxes are too high.
Preston and Reed want to work with the state legislature and Congress to make their idea of two Californias work.
Previously, proposals to split the state of California have included the effort to divide the state into six, others have suggested combining parts of the state with Oregon to create the new state of Jefferson.
So far, none of these ideas have made headway.
