A Michigan teenager is accused of stabbing a classmate while “smiling and laughing” throughout the fatal attack.
According to Fox News, 24 students watched while 17-year-old Tanya Lewis killed 16-year-old Danya Gibson with a kitchen knife. The assault took place in the classroom at Fitzgerald High School, in Warren, Michigan on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018. The assault occurred around 8:30 a.m. ET.
Witnesses reported watching the defendant smile and laugh as she chased her victim, according to Detective Seidel of the Warren Police Department.
Authorities at Fitzgerald High School cancelled classes Wednesday and Thursday. They stated they were “deeply saddened” by the attack.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the student’s family and we offer our deepest sympathy.”
Persecutors told the judge at the arraignment, on Friday, that Lewis screamed, “I’m going to kill her,” as a teacher tried to push her out of the classroom.
Police believe the animosity between the two straight-students was over a male student.
Lewis is being held without bail on first-degree murder. She told the judge she understood she was facing life behind bars without parole.
Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer held a press conference on Wednesday. He stated that the two teenagers were friends but had a falling out after they both dated the same boy.
Allegedly, Lewis stabbed Gibson twice in the upper chest – once to the heart – after she approached her Wednesday morning.
WYXZ reported that the assault occurred during a class transition. Gibson tried to run away, however, she was chased by Lewis who stabbed Gibson in the back, puncturing her lung.
There were between 20 and 30 students in the classroom with their teacher at the time. No one else was injured, according to Dwyer.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and died less than an hour later.
In Michigan, Lewis will be considered an adult in this criminal law case, even through she is 17.
The male student, whom the attack was allegedly over, is 16 or 17 years old. He is cooperating with the investigation.
Dwyer stated that the two girls were straight-A students and have not been in trouble before the attack. Gibson was a member of the cross-country team, robotics club, color guard, marching band, National Honors Society, and student council.
When Lewis was taken to the police station for questioning, she made some admissions, according to Dwyer.
Lewis did not enter a plea in court on Friday. She will be back in court later this month.
Gibson’s family is raising funds through a GoFundMe account for her funeral.
