Aging Successfully Reversed in Mice; Human Trials to Begin Next

Scientists have successfully reversed the aging process in mice according to a new study just released. Human trials are to begin next, possibly before the year is over. The study was published in the peer reviewed science journal Cell after researchers from both the U.S and Australia made the breakthrough discovery. Lead researcher David Sinclair of the University of New South Wales says he is hopeful that the outcome can be reproduced in human trials. A successful result in people would mean not just a slowing down of aging but a measurable reversal.

The study showed that after administering a certain compound to the mice, muscle degeneration and diseases caused by aging were reversed. Sinclair says the study results exceeded his expectations, explaining:

I’ve been studying aging at the molecular level now for nearly 20 years and I didn’t think I’d see a day when ageing could be reversed. I thought we’d be lucky to slow it down a little bit. The mice had more energy, their muscles were as though they’d be exercising and it was able to mimic the benefits of diet and exercise just within a week. We think that should be able to keep people healthier for longer and keep them from getting diseases of ageing.

The compound the mice ate resulted in their muscles becoming very toned, as if they’d been exercising. Inflammation, a key factor in many disease processes, was drastically reduced. Insulin resistance also declined dramatically and the mice had much more energy overall. Researchers say that what happened to the mice could be compared to a 60 year old person suddenly having the muscle tone and energy of someone in his or her 20s.

What’s more, say the researchers, these stunning results were realized within just one week’s time. The compound raises the level of a naturally occurring substance in the human body called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. This substance decreases as people age, although those who follow a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise do not suffer the same level of reduction in the substance as do people who do not exercise. This may explain why people who remain fit into their senior years often enjoy better health than others.

Scientists who participated in the study say that poor communication between mitochondria and the cell nucleus is to blame for the aging process. The compound the researchers have developed cause the cells to be able to “talk” to each other again. They compared the relationship between the nucleus and the mitochondria to a married couple; by the time the couple has been married for 20 years, “communication breaks down” and they don’t talk to each other as much. Just like a marriage, this relationship and communication within it can be repaired, say the researchers.

Aging has successfully been reversed in mice, but Sinclair says he needs to raise more money before he can commit to a date when trials may begin in humans. The results of this initial study in mice are very promising and may pave the way for similar results in humans.

Lol can’t take anything seriously when someone in the comments is calling themselves “bonerman”.

    April fools?

As a 40ish man who’s is starting to feel time’s force pressing onto his soul, life extension sounds cool. But given that we’re 7 billion and rising on this poor rock, I do question the necessity of the technology. Perhaps life extension should be reserved for colonists bound for new worlds

There is a simple solution to this problem. Preform a vasectomy and Tubal ligation on anyone who wants the anti aging pill. This would hold the population steady.

Also living indefinitely does not mean a person will live indefinitely. Due to accidents the average age was predicted to become 650.

Finally with people living forever humans technology and society will progress faster. Imagine if Steven Jobs, Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Edison, and Alan Turing were still alive what they could accomplish would be amazing.

Finally it would improve the economy. People are educated for about 20 years (negative impact on the economy) then they work for 40-50 years (positive impact on the economy). By increase the working stage of people the economy would become stronger.

Finally the earth has a current carrying capacity of 9-10 billion people. This number could also be largely increased by GMO crops, vegetarian diets, and renewable energy..

While living forever is not for everyone. The choice should be made available because the benefits outweigh the costs.

Quite excited for the outcome of the tests. What I wonder is since it’s “reversing” aging, will it eventually stop? Or will you keep de-aging until you die of youth… Odd to think about, but I hope that issues gets resolved!

I have been told this substance can start mitochondrial communication in even reverse dying cells. This was more for harvesting organs and preventing them from going bad or have the “dead signal” continue and desegregate the transplant.
Then again, this will obviously be the reason for the impending zombie apocalypse as it reanimates dead tissue 😮

we need love of life before longevity. as a race, war and killing expectations of core values deteriate our involvement of society and conversative abilities of life and long love.

So we can reverse aging, but we still can’t figure out a better, efficient, more sustainable source of energy than fossil fuels? Good job, humans.

    • charles   April 8, 2014 at 3:59 pm

      Do you use alternative energy?

People are always complaining that we don’t have more sustainable sources of energy however they fail to go out of their way and invest in them. Instead they simply use the convenience of fossil fuels.

Also fusion power is making huge strides. When that is complete (25-50 years) earth will have a source of unlimited (few million years worth), completely green, and cheap energy.

Sign me up for the trials, lol.

So if this is for real and restores collagen production in the body so that degeneration and wrinkles stop, I want in on it. By the way the Lord Jesus will restore His believing children with His divine health. He renews my youth as the wings of the eagles and my strength as the eagles. Oh I’m not Seth Earnest, I am his 54 yr old mom, Darva Earnest

Don’t make this a religion thing, it’s not.

Cell is peer-reviewed. The Bible wasn’t.
I’m going to defer to peer-reviewing on this one.

      • Helena   March 31, 2014 at 10:22 am

Actually…it very well COULD be a religious thing as the bible talks about Christ’s return happening after the life code is broken (essentially)…if we “stop people from dying…” wow…

        • Gavin   March 31, 2014 at 10:53 am

Except the bible is a fictional book.

        • Poopster   March 31, 2014 at 12:58 pm

Please stop. Go be excited about your 1800 year old fairy tale book some where else.

          • john   March 31, 2014 at 6:24 pm

There are ethical and social questions, which are informed by religious ideas. Shooting forward with little thought about the affects, except for the typically myopic techno crowd wowed at a new toy, is a model for potentially bad things blind siding us. Of course, given the comments above in this thread, I’m wasting bandwidth. Far to sure of your correctness to think there might be a problem.

          • charles   April 8, 2014 at 4:02 pm

Religion has caused enough problems and delayed human progress too much.

We should be questioning the ethical and social legitimacy of organized religion not science that will help humans not only enjoy a better quality of life but also advance as a species.

Exactly! No one is forced to take this pill. If you want to die and go to your heaven no one is stopping you.

  9. FUe   March 31, 2014 at 8:46 am

These trials still don’t prove to extend your lifespan. People going crazy over this, thinking it’s the ‘fountain of youth’ couldn’t be more wrong. Aging is a natural process, your body degrades over time and you eventually die. I honestly can’t wait to see this fail so I can sit back and laugh at the pathetic tossers who also believed the world was going to end because of an incomplete calendar.

    • Clayton   March 31, 2014 at 9:04 am

Have you read the paper? Do you have access to the data, or are you simply deciding it can’t be real? If you do have access to the paper I’d love to see it. They’ve clearly done their research, and it’s not even comparable to the Mayan Calendar fiasco. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t be altered. Why does this one have to fail? The explanation given in the article states that the mitochondria doesn’t communicate well with the nucleus… which is very reasonable. The theory of endosymbiosis says that some early prokaryote created a relationship with the [once free living] mitochondrial ancestor.

Do you have any actual evidence for your doubt, or have you just decided you’re all knowing?

    • apmechev   March 31, 2014 at 9:31 am

Smallpox is a natural process too, but I’d rather it be exterminated.

      • deemster   March 31, 2014 at 10:23 am

Where does smallpox come to play in all this?

  10. Justin   March 31, 2014 at 8:24 am

Not fake, check the sources. If you dig deep enough you’ll find its true and reliable…
Also saying “gay” to something you think is fake or stupid makes you very ignorant…
