Tyler Blackburn, the star of “Pretty Little Liars” and “Roswell, New Mexico,” said in an interview with The Advocate published on April 19, 2019, that he was queer.
The 32-year-old said he had identified as bisexual since he was a teenager. He was coming out now to be as free and happy as possible.
Blackburn said that when he was in his 20’s he had longterm relationships with multiple women, but always had an interest in men. Initially, the native of Los Angeles felt he had to identify as gay or heterosexual, even though neither felt right to him.
The actor said acting in the role of Sgt Alex Manes in the series “Roswell, New Mexico” helped him feel more comfortable with his feelings.
The character he portrayed was a war veteran who was gay. Playing that character helped him feel more comfortable in his skin, heart, and mind.
Blackburn said he could identify with the character and bring him to life. He knew what it was like to feel oppressed, and what it felt like wanting his father to accept him. He understood self-doubt and wanting something but being afraid to have it.
Blackburn said that when he was growing up, he was bullied and felt as his soul was being taken away.
The star became isolated from things and people he loved to feel safer, and it was soul-crushing doing this.
In the past, Blackburn felt he had to identify as gay or straight, and now he is ready to experience the emotions of what it is like to be a bisexual.
