President Obama’s visit to the Republic of Ireland – where he attended the G8 summit – was treated with the kind of fanfare usually reserved for a visit by the Pope. The First Family had been swooned over from the moment they arrived. One outspoken Liberal, however, was not caught up in the hype. Obama was labelled a “war criminal” by Irish politician Clare Daly.
Daly, who represents Dublin North in the Irish Parliament, seemed very displeased with every aspect of the US President’s visit. Of the First Lady and the Obama daughters, she said “We’ve had separate and special news bulletins by the State broadcaster to tell us what Michelle Obama and her daughters had for lunch in Dublin, but very little questioning of the fact that she was having lunch with Mr Tax Exile himself.” This remark referred to Michelle Obama and her daughters meeting Bono, the lead singer of the Irish band U2, in a bar in the village of Dalkey.
The irony of an extreme Left-wing politician criticizing America’s most Left-wing President seemed particularly amusing when Ms. Daly asked Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Enda Kenny what he intended to do to represent Ireland “…not as a lap-dog of US imperialism, but as an independent nation with an independent foreign policy…”. Daly was remarking upon the US President’s use of drone-strikes and she accused Obama of being a “war criminal”, having increased by 200 per cent the use of drones, which – according to Daly – had killed “thousands of people, including hundreds of children,” according to a report in the Irish Times. Daly also had harsh words for the First Family themselves and the media obsession with them, which she described as “unprecedented slobbering”. “It’s really hard to know which is worse, whether it’s the outpourings of the Obamas themselves or the sycophantic falling over them by sections of the media and the political establishment,” Ms. Daly said.
There was an additional reason behind the Irish politician’s claim that Obama was a “war criminal”; the question of his recent decision to arm the Syrian rebels, who Daly described as “…including the jihadists, fueling the destabilization of that region, continuing to undermine secularism and knock back conditions for women”. She went on to say of Obama “This is the man who is in essence stalling the Geneva peace talks by trying to broker enhanced leverage for the Syrian opposition by giving them arms – and to hell with the thousands more who’ll lose their lives, or the tens of thousands who will be displaced.” The Irish government has officially opposed an end to the embargo on arms shipments to Syria.
The Irish leader expressed his displeasure with Daly’s comments, saying “I think your comments are disgraceful. I think they do down the pride of Irish people all over the world who are more than happy to see this island being host to the G8.”
With the G8 summit over, the Obama entourage has moved grandly on to Germany. As for the Obama “war criminal” claim made by Liberal politician Clare Daly; history will judge. The great Prussian statesman, Otto von Bismarck, once pointed out that history is written by the victors. Ultimately, President George W. Bush will not go down in history as a “war criminal”, despite being so labelled, numerous times, by the political Left. As for Obama’s chances of also avoiding that ignominy; he will need to hold radical Islam at bay and preserve the American way of life, in order to do so. Whether he is willing – or able – to do that remains to be seen.
