Khloe Kardashian, the 29 year old socialite, has made headlines again. Not by staying married for 4 years, but by the sad realization that her husband is back using drugs and avoiding a meaningful rehabilitation. Los Angeles Clippers basketball player Lamar Odom has moved out of their $4 million Tarzana home on the orders of his wife. Only 2 years ago, Khloe and Lamar released Unbreakable Bond, their special perfume. It promised a sparkling, juicy texture of a variety of flavors including tonka bean. But this delightful scent was not indicative of the future to come. $14.99 may buy you a bottle of hope, but they have not been able to enjoy the promise.
While their marriage had looked to be doing well, the truth is that a hard drug addiction is not compatible with married life. Khloe has not currently filed for divorce. A source close to the couple is quoted as saying, “Khloe is more concerned about saving Lamar than ending her marriage.” Interventions have been tried in the past but Khloe has hope for the future. If anyone can clean up Lamar Odom’s act, it will be his wife. With or without the tonka beans.
Is this a case of White Knight Syndrome? White Knight Syndrome, coined to describe the man who enthusiastically pursues a woman who needs to be saved and nurtured, is just as applicable a term for a woman. The desire to be the omnipotent wife is strong. To clean up the act of your future child’s father is romantic with an emotional appeal. Khloe Kardashian has made it known that infertility issues are plaguing her marriage and she is determined to break Lamar of his destructive drug addiction. In fact she’ll work on his infidelity issues while she’s at it. With their love based on their essential unbreakable bond it’s not surprising that Khloe is investing in the possibility of nirvana. Or something like it. The tonka beans may help.
Perhaps she can exchange his addictions for some that are less destructive. A 2012 report by Partnership at Drugfree.org shows that as many as 23.5 million adults in the US have at one time had an issue with alcohol or drug use but Psychology Today reports that approximately 90% of these addictions are overcome. Meanwhile, Lamar has much to live for with a renewed interest in his basketball career, a beautiful wife and plans for a baby.
Pregnancy has not come easily and the three year wait has doubtless been the source of Lamar’s infidelities. Life feels hard for even the famous and wealthy. Let’s hope that neither Khloe nor Lamar look for an easy solution to these addictions by turning to TLC’s four season series, My Strange Addiction. Episodes include a succession of unusual and obscure addictive habits including Davecat who treats his life-sized inflatable doll like his wife. This might be a little too close to home. It could even break Khloe and Lamar’s unbreakable bond.
