It is a growing trend among the famous and not-so famous. Eating the placenta aka afterbirth is said to be beneficial to the new mother’s health and an aid against postpartum – also known as postnatal – depression. Kim Kardashian is apparently one more celebrity who plans on feasting on her own placenta. She will be joining a small group of five other celebrities who ate their placenta, although one of the five was snacking on her sister’s afterbirth and not her own.
It turns out that there are a couple of ways to ingest your own placenta. The first is eating the placenta after cooking. Unbelievably there are menus and recipes that show the “tastiest” way to prepare your special meal. Another way that is proving popular is to place the placenta in pills.
Lynnea Shrief, the founder and director of the Independent Placenta Encapsulation Network does just that, she encapsulates the placenta into pills that can be taken by the new mother. She is a huge proponent of the health properties that consuming your own placenta can give new mothers. She tells of ripping off a piece of her own placenta after giving birth and putting it in her mouth to rest between her cheek and gum. She swears that her energy level skyrocketed as a result.
But as mentioned above, Kim is not alone in her wish to join the other five celebrities who have eaten their own placenta. The list, though short, looks to grow as more and more of the rich and famous discuss the pros of this “healthy” trend.
On the reality television show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, while the family were dining, she asked the Kardashian chef if he had ever cooked a placenta. He responded that, no he has not, but his wife had eaten hers. He then went into a spiel about the health benefits. At this stage Kim is still only talking about it though.
And just to mention the celebs who’ve partaken in the act of placenta eating, here is the list:
1. January Jones
Best known for her role in Mad Men, the 34 year-old star has been taking “placenta pills” since giving birth to her son Xander. She claims that the pills replace valuable vitamins that mother’s lose when giving birth. While she is not “eating” her placenta she is ingesting it.
2. Alicia Silverstone
The Clueless star turned environmental and animal rights activist is the “earth mother” of the new millenium. Not only did she eat her own placenta, but she recently set up a website for vegan mother’s – like herself – to share their breast milk with mom’s who needed a little help in healthily breast feeding their offspring.
3. Mayim Bialik
Like Alicia Silverstone the Blossom and Big Band Theory actress is another “new age” earth mother. She believes in the benefits of breast feeding and came under criticism for breast feeding her son until he was almost four years-old.she is also a proponent for mothers eating their own placenta. In a blog post, entitled You’re Not Gross, she talks about other actresses who have eaten their placenta and been slammed for it. She has done her own slamming of folks who are against the practice.
4 & 5. Tamera Mowry and Tia Mowry
Tamera, and her twin sister Tia, got their start in the ABC/WB sitcom Sister,Sister and Tamera believed in the whole process so much that she shared a video of her and Tia partaking in a placenta ingesting moment. The video, which was aired on the season finale of their reality TV show Tia & Tamera, showed Tia getting a taste of her sister’s blended placenta mixed with brandy. The overall reaction of fans was one of disgust. While Tia did not, in fact, eat her own placenta, the fact that she shared in her twin’s puts her on the list.
The act of eating one’s own placenta has been around for awhile. In the United Kingdom, celebrity cook Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall infamously prepared a woman’s afterbirth as a pâté which was enjoyed by the entire family in his 2004 television program TV Dinners.
The placenta has also been used in Chinese medicine for years. Regardless of whether you feel that Kim Kardashian’s plan to join the five other celebrities who have eaten, or ingested, the placenta is a publicity ploy or not, she is still only talking at this stage. Although her reasoning seems to have less to do with the health properties and more about the alleged ability of the placenta to make you look younger.
