Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart Reunite in ‘American Ultra’

Kristen Stewart American Ultra

Fans of Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg are in for a treat. The couple are set to star in upcoming action-comedy American Ultra as hero and heroine on the run with the government on their tail. The movie is described by producer Anthony Bregman as:

“Simply put, American Ultra will be the most fun you can possibly have in a movie theater without the use of drugs, fireworks or canola oil,”

In 2009, the world was a lot different for Eisenberg and Stewart. Stewart had just become a part of the Twilight mania that would eventually overshadow any other role she ever starred in. Eisenberg was just a cute little actor playing Hollywood’s favorite character: the neurotic, cute and rapid-talking Jew, in a series of indies. Pre-Adventureland, Eisenberg was warmly received by critics for his roles in Roger Doger, The Squid and the Whale, The Education of Charlie Banks and The Living Wake. Steward was never taken seriously as an actress and wasn’t ready to break out of her comfort zone as the quiet, indie girl.

Suddenly the duo was cast in an intelligent, romantic, coming-of-age comedy titled “Adventureland.” Marketed as the follow-up to Superbad, with the same director, Greg Mottola, behind the project, Adventureland failed to gain the same success at the box office, although it was widely praised by critics.

The film gained a cult following later on and was admired for its portrayal of unique, no BS female characters as in Stewart’s “Em.” The film also tackled teenage angst, virginity, pot-induced stream of consciousness and self-discovery. As James takes this summer job in Adventureland amusement park to pay for his trip to New York, he finds out a lot about himself, falls in love with his coworker, stands up for his friends and dates Lisa P the girl whose “ass is a higher truth.” The movie, sweet and thought-provoking as it is concludes with James losing his virginity to Em in one of the cutest yet hottest sex scenes in 2009. This has probably been Jesse Eisenberg’s longest sex scene, might as well be his one and only.

Will American Ultra be the same? The plot of the movie describes Eisenberg’s character Mike as a non-ambitious, stoner –30 minutes or less anyone?- who is trapped in a small, sleepy town. Stewart plays Phoebe, his long, suffering girlfriend who happens to live with him as well. The couple’s life is turned upside down, however, when Mike’s past catches up with him and they’re suddenly on the run with the government hunting Mike’s ass, ready to take him – and his girlfriend – down.

Big names are also working on this project. Chronicle scriptwriter, Max Landis penned down the script and director Nima Nourizadeh –Project X– is the one handling it. American Ultra producers are Britton Rizzio and David Alpert for Circle of Confusion and the widely quoted Bregman for Likely Story. Executive producers for the movie are Raj Brinder Singh of Merced Media Partners and Kevin Frakes of PalmStar Media Capital. It looks like it is going to be a big hit.

American Ultra will start shooting in April 2014.

That’s right, he was asked a factually incorrect question. Jesse has not been “typecast” as a Jew. In all his wide release (1000+ theatres) films, the only explicitly Jewish character he played was in The Social Network, a role any young actor in Hollywood would have given anything to play.

The author of The Guardian article simply believes the same outrageous stereotypes you do, which is why she would ask Jesse that but not the people I mentioned.

P.S., in Adventureland, Eisenberg’s character was supposed to be non-Jewish, like the writer-director it is based on, Greg Mottola, who is Irish-Italian and Catholic. Kristen Stewart’s and Martin Starr’s characters were the ones who were Jewish. So the typecasting goes on in your mind, not in that of the director.

I meant to write, the “following from Jesse’s generation are also all Jewish”.

No, wrong, Jesse Eisenberg didn’t play a Jewish character in most of his films, and certainly not in Adventureland. You just wrote that he did because you see him as “Jewish” since you have a strong racist bias, etc.

The following from Jesse’s generation are also all Jewish: Natalie Portman, Logan Lerman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mila Kunis, Andrew Garfield, Anton Yelchin, Jake Gyllenhaal, James Franco, Kat Dennings, Scarlett Johansson, Ezra Miller, Shia LaBeouf, Melanie Laurent, and many, many, more. Well you have no right to label me as a racist when you know nothing about me. I was not referring to Adventureland but Jesse has been typecast as Woody Allenish kind of character in many movies and -surprisingly- some of the characters happened to be Jewish which I have nothing against and why would I?

Also I wasn’t the first person to mention this, in Lynn Hirschberg’s screen test, the same topic was brought up. In this article http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/jul/04/jesse-eisenberg-now-you-see-me He was asked if he was worried he was being typecast as “neurotic Jewish guy, one of Hollywood’s most beloved and reductive tropes.”
Jesse Eisenberg is a brilliant actor and so are most of the actors you just mentioned and certainly mentioning that an actor was typecast in a certain role doesn’t insult him on a personal level.
