As Neil Patrick Harris, playfully referred to as NPH, has blown away everyone with his performance in Hedwig and the Angry Inch this week, there are some things many may not know about the entertainer. He is obsessed with all things magic and has performed magic in interviews such as The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He also is a member of a magic club called Magic Castle. So, he must really love magic since he is also on board of this club as well.
NPH has been given a lifetime supply of Red Bull by the energy drink company, because he gives them free advertisement. Before a show he does some deep breathing exercises then, drinks Red Bull as it helps calm his pre-jitters. His co-stars on How I Met Your Mother can vouch for this as well. According to inside sources, he guzzled two Red Bulls before coming on set every day.
Another fun fact about Harris is his love for puppets. Yes, puppets. NPH even went as far as to do research on Sesame Street, because he wanted to include Waldorf and Statler when he hosted the Emmy’s. Unfortunately, it was too expensive to pull off. At one time he even had a puppet-making shop in his garage. While in high school, he performed in several plays. Harris was once cast as Dorothy’s dog, Toto, in The Wizard of Oz. An additional fun fact is Freddie Prinze Jr. also attended the same high school as NPH.
A great thing you may not know about the ex-Doogie Howser M.D. star is that he is a big supporter of cancer organizations. The reason is that his partner David Burtka’s mother died of Leukemia. He officially announced he was proud to be a gay man in Hollywood in 2006. In 2010, Harris and Burke’s surrogate mother delivered fraternal twins Gideon and Harper. They are each the father of one baby. They don’t know whose is whose, but they seem to prefer it that way.
Harris’ go-to music at home with his partner and twins is Reedy Park Radio, which plays Disney themed music. The ex-How I Met Your Mother star has a meditation corner in his house filled with such calming items as a Buddha statue, four wisdom teeth (his own), fortunes from fortune cookies, and even rocks he has collected over the years. He had to lose quite a bit of weight for his role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. NPH even went as far as to say if he was forced to follow the conventions in the 1950s he would have married someone like Doris Day or Cyd Charisse. Similar to the feminine-masculine era that they portrayed during that time. Some may remember he has played a doctor twice. First, in Doogie Howser M.D., and then, later as Dr. Horrible.
Another thing to know is that Neil Patrick Harris’ parents own a restaurant and he may pop in from time to time when in town. Many may not realize this, but screenwriter Mark Medoff discovered him at a drama camp he was attending and cast him in Clara’s Heart. The ex-Dr. Horrible star has also mentioned that since coming out of the closet the female fans seemed to have embraced him even more. One thing is for certain though, Harris is a very memorable person, whether it is his obsession with puppets or his love for Red Bull.
