Taylor Swift has been photographed on a regular, almost daily, basis over the last month while in The Big Apple. Shots of her appearing classic and demure in ruby red lipstick and a chic uptown look have been popping up all over the Internet. Suspicions about why the long-legged gal is gallivanting about town have been waylaid by news of her recent splurge, in which she spent $20 million on not one, but two, New York City penthouses, supposedly previous abodes of the notable Peter Jackson.
Swift has a bit of a reputation for making extravagant purchases when it comes to her domicile, or domiciles. A year ago last April, the young lady spent $17.75 million dollars on an 11,000 square foot waterfront mansion, which included eight bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms, in Westerly, Rhode Island. Swift apparently flipped her $4.9 million Cape Cod beach home, which was near her ex-boyfriend’s estate, for a cool profit of $1 million. It is safe to say that she recycled that dough in order to indulge in a much larger property with enough bathrooms for each member of the Brady Bunch, including Alice and Tiger, to use at the same time.
The jet-setting star also has a more modest estate to which to retire while she is in the neighborhood of Beverly Hills – a home which she purchased for $3.5 million at the burgeoning age of 21. Her big girl condo in Nashville was bought in 2009 for nearly $2 million. If that is not enough, she is reportedly looking for an international domicile in London. Considering the country singer reportedly earned $55 million last year, she should feel free to play house as much as she likes, and she likes to play a lot.
This time around, the 24-year-old swiftly picked up two penthouses in her new Manhattan neighborhood, splurging on an entire floor of the 11-unit building, adding up to over 8,000 square feet. According to official property records, the multiple award-winning Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson, put two of his units on the market a year ago in May, and they were finally sold last month to a mystery buyer, although for a few million less than the asking price. Most sources feel there is enough evidence to support rumors that Miss Swift is the mystery buyer who wiggled her way into Jackson’s hobbit hole.
There were suspicions that she was going to buy in the West Village or Soho, but instead she has decided to put down roots in the Tribeca sector, where she will find herself in very good company. Tribeca is a star-studded neighborhood and home to at least a handful of notables, such as hip-hop mom and pop, Jay Z and Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bethenny Frankel. Also, with friends like Lena Dunham and Karlie Kloss nearby, Swift is sure to never be too alone in her enormous and expansive Tribeca duplex. Girl Party!
At the end of the day, no matter where she lands, the country star says Nashville will always be her home. She recently told Time magazine: “It’s hard to describe why you consider a town your home base, except that when people ask me ‘Where’s home?’ I don’t even think before I say ‘Nashville’.”
She continued, saying, “I spend as much time in Nashville as I can. The cool thing about spending time in Nashville is that no one knows when I’m there. In New York and L.A., there are photographers waiting on the street, and it seems like every errand I run is photographed and documented.”
It appears that now when Swift needs to be in NYC, she can flee from photographers and escape to her new multimillion dollar two-penthouse-sized home, and she has Mr. Jackson to thank for it. Chances are though, if she actually did buy a hobbit hole, she would not be so easy to find. There is always next time.
