The darker the skin, the less likely one is prone to burn in the sun. “Black Don’t Crack”, is an old-school adage proudly touted by some African Americans with respect to how dark skin tends to hold its firmness and elasticity. This darker skin providing scores of Africans, natives of India, and native Australians with a youthful countenance that often defies their aging years. The hormone melanin is reportedly responsible for these added skin benefits. It’s defined as the primary determinant of skin color. Yet, melanin is about far more than skin color and complexion.
Melanin, in reality, is a mere hormone that is more widely produced in humans of color than in humans of Caucasian ethnicity. A societal myth still thought to be true, is that the Caucasian race is completely devoid of melanin, but such is not the case. Factually, Caucasians do indeed produce melanin, but not in the same volume. Some Caucasians may burn while over-exposed to sunlight, while others never burn.
The hormone melanin is produced by the pineal gland, which scientists assert serves multiple purposes for functional human beings. It’s an endocrine gland responsible for not just producing melatonin (melanin) , but also serotonin. Serotonin is commonly referred to as the happy hormone. Melanin also affects waking and sleeping patterns, and how the body reacts to day and night cycles. Melanin is released at night while humans are asleep, and their secretions are lower during the day. Feelings of drowsiness are therefore a result of the pineal gland releasing a dose of melatonin. The beneficial aspects of melatonin have, over the past two decades, led to the rise in the purchase of manufactured melatonin.
This very small pineal gland plays a profound role in how human beings co-exist in today’s active world. Some members of the scientific community assert that the pineal gland is also responsible for the activation of a sixth sense. It has been touted as the gland that controls the extrasensory proverbial third eye. Legitimate mediums and psychics are thought to be in possession of a very high-functioning pineal gland. With this highly functioning third eye; humans develop a heightened sense of intuition, and perhaps even possess clairvoyant and clairaudient abilities. Melanin and its connection to complexion and ageless skin is the very least of how this hormone functions within the human body.
New Age guru’s are penning books on how to activate the pineal gland and report that the healthy function of the gland is being compromised and impeded. The culprits being poor eating habits, married with the intake of hidden toxins; namely fluoride. Fluoride, which is found in toothpaste and much of the country’s water supply, is allegedly responsible for the calcification of the pineal gland rendering it virtually inactive.
As the pineal gland produces both melanin and serotonin, it stands to reason that a malfunctioning pineal gland may, as well, be responsible for depression or low spirits. It could be responsible for the demeanor of happier and more optimistic types who may merely be blessed with a pineal gland that produces healthier doses of serotonin. While skin and complexion may indeed be served by a healthy release of melatonin during slumber, the human race is also adequately served by awakening with the feeling of health, happiness and the ability to take on the challenges of the day.
