In July 2016, fans of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers movie will get a chance to see the heroes on screen again. This is more than 20 years since the original movie, which was created based on the TV show by the original name. Since then, the franchise has grown and adapted, offering children entertainment as they watch their disguised heroes save the world one week from the next.
The plans for the reboot movie were announced back in May 2014, but the date for release was uncertain. In fact, very few plans for the movie were shared; just that it would be a reboot based on the original movie.
It is unlikely that most of the original actors will reprise any of their roles. The only one that is really possible is Jason David Frank, who played Tommy Oliver in the show. He has gone onto reprise his role in various sequel movies and also appears as the Green Ranger—his original Ranger color—at events around the world.
Two that are slight possibilities are Amy Johnson, who played Kimberly Ann Hart, and Walter Emanuel Jones, who played Zack Taylor. The two have continued acting and directing since their time on the show. While David Yost, who played Billy Cranston, is still acting, he has very negative memories from his time on the show, and he may not want to bring them all back with a reboot. Other original actors have either passed away or have moved on with their lives.
The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers movie will be coming in July 2016. This is a big month for movies, with the likes of King Arthur by Guy Richie hitting movie theaters at the same time. There are reports that King Arthur will give the popular 90s show a good run for its money.
Various media establishments have shared their thoughts on who should be the new Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, with E! Online suggesting Michael B. Jordan for the Red Ranger. Jordan has been cast as the new Johnny Storm in the Fantastic 4 and is known for his role with Zac Efron in That Awkward Moment.
For the Pink Ranger, E! Online suggests Elle Fanning, seemingly sticking with the All-American girl for the role. This was the idea for the Pink Ranger for many years until recently. Now the Yellow Ranger tends to be the All-American girl. Considering this is a reboot of the original movie and series, it makes sense to go back to the roots.
E! Online did get one thing wrong in suggesting that the White Ranger was originally evil. While the White Ranger was Tommy Oliver’s second color, he was originally the Green Ranger. It was the green coin, called the Dragon Power Coin, that was used by Rita Rapulsa to create her own evil Ranger to take on the others. Once the group realized the problem, they managed to save Tommy but his power becomes unstable. Eventually, he loses his Green Ranger powers and later becomes the White Ranger.
Many young adults who watched the Power Rangers in the 90s will be excited about the news. They just want to know more about the reboot. All that is known so far is that the new Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers movie is coming to movie theaters in July 2016.
