Benedict Cumberbatch Gets Married

Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch is officially off the market after he got married to his pregnant fiancée, Sophie Hunter, on Valentine’s Day. The couple had just made an announcement in January, that they were expecting their first child together. The ceremony was an intimate gathering of close friends and family, in England at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul.

Hunter and Cumberbatch first met while on the set of the 2009 movie, Burlesque Fairytales. The couple was notoriously quiet about their relationship following their meeting. However, the announcement of their engagement occurred in a very public manner. In November 2014, the actor chose an old-fashioned newspaper pronouncement in The Times of London to publicize the engagement.

The night prior to the wedding, Cumberbatch was apparently at the Royal Yacht Squadron. This particular yacht club is a private, members only club with such patrons as Queen Elizabeth II. On Saturday, the day of the ceremony, there were about 40 people that arrived at the church. Some of the guests that arrived included Tom Hiddleston, as well as one of Cumberbatch’s costars on Sherlock, Andrew Scott. On her arrival at the church, Hunter was protected from onlookers and those trying to take pictures by umbrellas. Then about 40 minutes after she entered the church, the two exited to a round of cheers. They were then taken away in a vintage jaguar.

After Cumberbatch and Hunter got married, the couple along with their guests, went on to the reception which was held at Mottistone Manor. The grounds are over 650 acres and is relatively old with a reference in a survey of England, the Domesday Book, that dates back to 1086. Some of the oldest sections of the home that are standing on the estate date all the way back to the 1400’s. The grounds are surrounded by roses and there is a meadow of bluebells nearby.

One guest who did not make it to the ceremony, but did send their well wishes, was Dame Judi Dench. The actress has known Cumberbatch since he was a young boy, since she had attended school with his mother at Central School of Music and Drama. Dench was promoting her upcoming movie, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, in London and was unable to make it to the nuptials. She said she hoped that Hunter and Cumberbatch had a beautiful day. As she stood in a cloudy and overcast London, she did say she had hoped that they would have better weather but knew they were probably having a lovely day no matter what.

Although Cumberbatch has become a big name in both television and big screen roles, locals where the couple tied the knot did not make a big fuss over the wedding. A source that spoke to People, said that locals in the town are not bothered by the goings-on surrounding the wedding. Basically there is not much talk around town about the wedding, the couple themselves or the reception. For fans of the actor, however, the next time he can be seen will be when he makes his appearance at the Oscars where he is up for Best Actor. This is the first marriage for both Hunter and Cumberbatch.
