85th Academy Award nominations

And The Winner Is”

The Oscar nominations for 2012’s films were announced today. As predicted, Stephen Spielberg’s “Lincoln” topped all of the 85th Academy Award nominations with 12. Director Ang Lee’s “The Life of Pi” was second with 11. “Les Miserables”, the musical based on Victor Hugo’s acclaimed novel, received 8 nominations.

Nominees for best picture are: “Lincoln“, “Life of Pi“, “Beasts of the Southern Wild“, “Amour“, “Argo“, “Django Unchained“, “Zero Dark Thirty”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, and “Les Miserables”.

Best Actor nominees: Daniel Day Lewis for “Lincoln”, Hugh Jackman for “Les Miserables”, Denzel Washington for “Flight”, Joaquin Phoenix for “The Master”, and Bradley Cooper for “Silver Linings Playbook”.

Best Actress nominees: Quvenzhane Wallis for “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, Jessica Chastain for “Zero Dark Thirty”, Jennifer Lawrence, “Silver Linings Playbook”, Naomi Watts for “The Impossible”, and Emmanuelle Riva for “Amour”.

Kathryn Bigelow, (“Zero Dark Thirty”), Quentin Tarantino, (“Django Unchained”), and Tom Hooper, (“Les Miserables”), failed to receive nominations for best director.

There is always one big surprise. This year’s is “Beasts of the Southern Wild”. “Beasts” is a small independent film starring Quvenzhane Wallis who is only 9 years old. She becomes the youngest person ever to be nominated in the category of best actress. The film receive 4 nominations. In addition to best actress, it is nominated for best picture, best director, and best adapted screenplay.

The awards will be televised on February 24th.
