Newly crowned No. 1 Indiana coughed up the No.1 spot again on Thursday night losing to Illinois 74-772. Illinois scored a layup at the buzzer to down the Hoosiers.
Indiana regained the No.1 spot after beating then No. 1 Michigan on Saturday Feb 2. Indiana has been bit of a Jekel and Hyde as of late. Anytime they have a chance to solidify themselves as basketballs best team they falter. Yet they can climb right back in the discussion by winning six in a row before a loss, then winning five in a row before yet another loss, their third of the season. During those streaks they beat then No. 13 Michigan State, then No. 8 Minnesota, and then No.1 Michigan.
Tonight Indiana was rolling up 41-29 at halftime and up 55-41 with 12:45 remaining in the game. Illinois never fully went away though, like that fly while you are eating a picnic. They were down 70-62 with 2:55 remaining before D.J.Richardson hit a three. Richardson then hit another three and it a jumper to tie the game at 70 all.
Victor Oladipo drove the lane and hit a layup with :52 left to put Indiana ahead 72-70. Brandon Paul then made two free throws for Illinois to tie it back up at 72 with :37 left. Richardson was set to be the hero as he get the steal and was headed in for a layup before Victor Oladipo swooped in for a emphatic block with 0.9 seconds left. On the ensuing in bounds Tyler Griffey broke open for the game winning layup.
Richardson led the way for Illinois with 23 points, while Cody Zeller led Indiana with 14 points and 9 rebounds. By Steve Kish
