Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were the topic of conversation on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday and guest Joss Whedon talked about Avengers 2 and new characters for the verse. Joss was actually there to talk about his adaptation of William Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing.
Joss’s adaptation of the Baird’s play is a modern reinterpretation of the classic and is full of “Whedon regulars” like Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Fran Kranz and Tom Lenk. But while he was there he decided to discuss the 2015 Avengers sequel.
The first thing that Joss wanted to talk about was the inclusion of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, two characters that Whedon has mentioned before as being in the script. Of the two additions, Joss said, “There are new characters. I’ve already said that we’re going to have a brother/sister team, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who were great mainstays of The Avengers when I was reading the comics as a kid.”
He went on to say that, “Besides the fact that I grew up reading them, their powers are very visually interesting. One of the problems I had on the first one was, everybody basically had punchy powers. ‘I can hit,’ ‘I can also hit.’ Hopefully it didn’t get too boring. But coming into the second one, [Quicksilver]’s got super speed. [Scarlet] can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There’s good stuff that they can do that will help sort of keep it fresh.”
Joss also acknowledged a personal fondness for them due to their prominent roles in comics that he’d read as a kid, calling them “great mainstays in the Avengers.” It made sense that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were on Joss Whedon’s agenda to talk about along with Avengers 2 on the Jimmy Fallon show as he is always keen to show what is coming up next in his projects.
For those of you who did not grow up reading the Avengers comic books, here is a quick overview of the series. Think of it as the Avengers 101, “introduction to the Characters of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.” The two are mutants (obviously)and are brother and sister. Quicksilver possesses superhuman speed and Scarlet Witch is able to control probability and/or the power to alter reality, which should mix things up a bit for the next film. The pair were originally recruited by their father Magneto after he saves Scarlet Witch when she accidentally causes a house to catch fire. Although they come from the X-Men universe, they are being crossed over. The exact details aren’t known.
It is always fun to hear the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator get excited about his projects, characters and their worlds. That he is a fan of the Avengers and X-Men verses is evident in his enthusiasm.
Joss went on the the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show one day after Bryan Singer, the director of X-Men: Days of Future Past, announced via Twitter that Quicksilver would appear in that movie in 2014 and that the part of Quicksilver would be played by actor Evan Peters.
Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige has said that the two characters were a “special case” due to their history in both the X-Men and Avengers comics, so it has been determined that the characters could be in either feature.
Those in the know, have speculated that we could wind up with two completely different versions of the same character based on which verse they are in.
It will be interesting to see whether Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon’s verse of Avengers 2 will be very different from the X-men verse, but he did not speculate on Jimmy Fallon’s show as to what differences, if any, there would be.
