Jimmy Fallon is replacing Jay Leno on the Tonight Show after the Winter Olympics.  Fallon will be leaving “Late Night”, also on NBC.  His replacement will be another SNL cast member, Seth Meyers.

Like Fallon, Meyers has been the anchor of the “Weekend Update” segment of SNL for several years.  Meyers is also the long-running shows lead writer.  The choice of Meyers as the host of Late Night comes as no surprise.  It has been rumored that he was the definitive choice for the 12:35 a.m. show since March.  Lorne Michaels is the executive producer of the show.

“We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation,” said NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. “His years at SNL‘s Weekend Update desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the Late Night franchise.”

“I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car,” Meyers said. “Twelve-thirty on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice.”

Meyers has been a cast member on SNL for 12 seasons.  He has been the shows lead writer for 8 years, and the host of Weekend Update for seven.

Meyers said he is pleased to make the change, while continuing his association with Michaels.  He will be the fourth host of the late night show.  David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Mr. Fallon preceded him.

“I am aware of the history,” Mr. Meyers said. “Each chapter of my life has sort of been spent enjoying each of the guys who had the job. Letterman was sort of my first introduction to late-night television. And Conan was all through college and post-college years. Jimmy, obviously, I think, does it as well as anyone could ever do it.”

Decisions are yet to come about the shows format with Meyers.

“I don’t want to make any broad pronouncements about how the show is going to be, whether it’s going to be the same or different,” Mr. Meyers said. “But I have to draw on my background in improvisational comedy and sketch comedy and stand-up comedy and try to find some mix of that.”

Meyers did say he would like to implement a segment of Weekend Update in which he interviews comedic stars.

Meyers will continue his role on SNL until later this year.  When all the changes occur, the late evening line-up will be Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Carson Daly.
